Why Mathematics and Literature? By Lexi and Shanna

Ever heard these phrases before? The students know how to do the math, they just don't understand what the question is asking. The thing I don't like about this new series is the way the problems are stated; they're hard for the students to get what to do. The reading level is too hard for the students. I have to simplify, to reword the questions for my students, and then they can do it.

Is math looking more and more like this?

Why ask why! If we know that math is more task driven why don’t we use reading techniques to teach math?

Getting to the CORE Today we will review reading comprehension techniques that will help our students become better problem solvers.

Prior Knowledge Activities

Activity Time! With a group of people sitting near you, read your children’s book and create “A Teacher-Generated Anticipatory Guide.” Here is your example:

Activity (pencil paper)

Try this Give students the following task. Have them find the gist of it by themselves, with a partner and then back to their seats to re- write their original gist.
