Family & Society Studies Worldwide Searching

To search Family & Society Studies Worldwide, I will need to start at the Rod Library Homepage. http://www.library.uni.edu/

I will then select Databases A-Z under Journal and Magazine Articles (Panther Prowler) from the Main Menu.

I can then find the Family & Society Studies Worldwide database I need and select it.

Family & Society Studies Worldwide, Gender Studies Database, and Child Abuse, Child Welfare & Adoption Database are all BiblioLine databases and search in a similar manner.

This is the main BiblioLine screen This is the main BiblioLine screen. One may, at this time, choose to search one of three BiblioLine databases or any combination of the three.

For this demonstration, I will be searching only the Family & Society Studies Worldwide database. I will select it and click on Continue.

This is the default BiblioLine search screen for Family & Society Studies Worldwide.

For this demonstration, I will be searching for information on the parenting skills of teenage mothers and/or fathers. First, I need to identify the terms I will need to search for. I will start with these: teenage father teenage fathers teenage mother teenage mothers parenting skills

Since I do not know what words this database uses for the terms I have identified, I am going to try to identify them by using the Index.

First I will type teenage father into the Index Terms search box and click Index in the right menu.

It looks like Teenage Fathers is the accepted term It looks like Teenage Fathers is the accepted term. I will use that instead of Teenage Father. I will click on that term and then on Add to Search Field at the top.

The new term has been added to my search The new term has been added to my search. I will now return to the index (by clicking on Index at the right) and see if I can find Teenage Mothers.

By clicking on More several times at the bottom of the screen, I have found Teenage Mothers and have checked the box for that term. I will now click on Add to Search Field at the top.

Teenage mothers has been added to my search set.

Since Teenage Fathers and Mothers are sometimes called Adolescent Fathers and Mothers, I will need to search for those terms as well in order not to miss any entries which may be valuable. I will again click on Index.

I will search for Adolescent Fathers and Adolescent Mothers in the same way I searched for Teenage Fathers and Mothers.

These two new terms have been added to my search.

I still need to add my last term which is Parenting Skills I still need to add my last term which is Parenting Skills. I will look for that term.

I will now Add to Search Field my new term.

My search has put OR between each of my terms My search has put OR between each of my terms. I will accept the terms Teenage Fathers or Adolescent Fathers or Teenage Mothers or Adolescent Mothers, however, I will need the term Parenting Skills to appear in each entry. To do this I must change the OR to And before the last term.

Here is the changed search phrase Here is the changed search phrase. I can now click on Search on the right.

I now have a set of 56 entries I now have a set of 56 entries. I will look through them to make sure I have gotten what I need.

I will click on View Database Record to make sure I the records called up have the terms in them I need.

A quick look at the Indexed Terms tells me that each entry contains either Teenage (or adolescent ) Fathers, Teenage (or adolescent) Mothers, AND the term Parenting Skills.

Now that I have my set of 56, how can I determine if this library has access to them?

I will click on the button on the first entry to see how I can get it.

The link enables this database to be linked to other databases The link enables this database to be linked to other databases. will take me directly to the article I am looking for in some databases, while in others, I will be taken only to the search screen for that database. For these, I will need to look for the article myself.

The button on the first entry tells me that an electronic copy of this article is available through Wiley Interscience. I will click on that to find it.

When I click on #8 below I get a screen that does not include an electronic version. What do I do next?

The screen I get for #8 suggests that I try the Library Catalog (UNISTAR). I will click on that.

I have been taken into UNISTAR and it looks like this journal is available in paper. I will write down the call number and find it on level 1 of the library.

I will continue to go through my entries, printing off the ones available electronically and writing down the call numbers for those available only in paper. What can I do if I find one not available in either format?

I will go into UNISTAR and select the tab Borrow from Other Libraries I will go into UNISTAR and select the tab Borrow from Other Libraries. I will then fill out the requested information and the article will be sent to me.
