The 9th grade year of a student’s educational career is the most critical year!!!!!! Students who fail more than one freshman year class are the most at-risk for dropping out of school. (Eng. 9, Algebra, PE) Freshman Transition

In fact, “9th grade has been identified as the most critical point to intervene and prevent students from losing motivation, failing, and dropping out of school” (Gainey and Webb, 1998, 2). Many ninth graders fail courses, for a recent study in Chicago indicated over forty percent of ninth graders fail a major subject in the first semester, while twenty percent fail two or more (Roderick, 1999). Really?.......Says who?

Academic Rigor, Freedom, and Expectations all increase Parent Involvement traditionally decreases Attendance, Attendance, Attendance……. Lack of connectedness…….Little Fish, Big Pond Social Complexity SOL and Credit Requirements……No free passes Why does this happen?

BHS Administrators, Teachers, and Counselors are here to help, advise, guide, listen, and encourage. Clubs, Organizations, Activities, Athletics……. Parent Teacher Student Advisory (PTSA), Boosters, etc. Communication, Communication, Communication…… Specialized Programs for Freshman (Gobbler Prep, Double Block Classes, Developmental Reading, Resource, etc…..) Dedicated staff that will tutor, remediate, and guide students along the way Uh Oh?!?!?!........It will be okay

What to expect? Even/Odd Schedule – 8 Periods hybrid schedule All periods are 90 minutes Pilot program of a 4 x 4 block schedule of classes = hybrid schedule Rigorous course work for classes that may require before school or after-school tutoring Multiple options for course selection depending upon academic and career plan. Process not product! What to expect?

Standard vs. Advanced Diploma Deciding on a diploma option is an important decision that needs to be discussed NOW. Students expecting to head to a 4 year or 2 year college out of high school should be on an advanced diploma. Changes to Diploma Status can be made at any point in a student’s high school career; however, a late decision to attempt an advanced diploma could be costly. Discuss your plans following high school NOW. Your counselor will want to hear your plans to help guide you in your course selection. Standard vs. Advanced Diploma

Standard Diploma Course Requirements (8 VAC 20-131-50.B) Discipline Area Standard Credits Verified Credits English 4 2 Mathematics 3 1 Laboratory Science History & Social Sciences Health & Physical Education Fine Arts or Career & Technical Education Foreign Language, Fine Arts or Career & Technical Education Economics and Personal Finance Electives Student Selected Test Total 22 6

Math Selections – 9th Grade Mrs. Slater: This current school year: Math 8 – Algebra 1 Part 1 Semester DB ….then…. Algebra 1 Part 2 Semester DB Algebra 1 Part 1 – Algebra 1 Part 2 DB or SB End of year grade will determine DB (C, D) or SB (A, B) Algebra 1 – Geometry DB, SB, or Advanced (CP) Single Blocking vs. Double Blocking May be student/parent choice depending upon student’s level of math proficiency. May be mandatory based upon grade and/or SOL’s in prior math class. Double Blocking means the student has the class every day instead of every other day. Math Selections – 9th Grade

English 9 and Developmental Reading All students will be enrolled in English 9. Selection for Developmental Reading is based on several factors to include 8th grade reading scores, teacher recommendations from 8th grade, overall school performance, etc…. Strong performances in English 9 and Algebra are the most critical components for a 9th grader. Success in these courses often determines whether or not a student will graduate on-time with their peers. English 9 and Developmental Reading

Other Course Selections… Students may enroll in Earth Science – Advanced (CP) or general Earth Science. Students will be enrolled in World Geography World History II is now a sophomore level class in which Advanced Diploma students will enroll.
