The End of the Viking Age The Vikings were a group who terrorized most of coastal Europe for over 200 years (800-1000 CE) They built a culture of Violence and slavery mixed in with a structured system of laws and government. Men and women shared work in society Women had rights, could own land, divorce, & sue in court Farmers, fishermen Owned slaves (thralls) did majority of work on farms Laws protected people and property

Viking Culture The Viking culture was rich with artistry and legends. Left evidence of this in their skilled woodwork and metalwork.

Viking Influence Today Influence based on their legends can be seen today… Thor, Marvel Comic/God of Thunder Vikings TV Show

Vikings & North America The Vikings were great adventurers, and were the first Europeans to settle in North America. Leif Erikson established a Viking settlement in Newfoundland. Oct 9 = Leif Erikson Day USA

The End of Viking Terror 11th Century CE European Monarch grew stronger and learned how to deal with their violent neighbours. Monarchs gave half of England (Danelaw) to Viking lords who then protected Britain from other Vikings. The people of Norway and Denmark became Christian, which also helped dissolve the traditional beliefs and violent ways of the Viking people.
