Do First Answer the following questions to the best of your ability. You may not know for sure so Guesstimate! How many people are in your family? Where does your family get the food they eat? How much money does your family spend on food in a week? Estimate.

Hungry Planet In 2005 Peter Menzel wrote a book called Hungry Planet: What the world eats He researched families all over the world to see what they were eating, how much they were eating, where their food came from and how much it cost. Over the next 2 days, we will be analyzing some of the pictures he took to determine if there is a relationship between caloric intake and a country’s level of development

Hungry Planet Calorie: is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. These quantities are often used for the total amount of food energy in a meal or type of food. *It is recommended that grown adults is about 2,000 calories a day Caloric Intake: The amount of food energy taken in or eaten Life Expectancy: The amount of time a person is expected to live in a given country

Guatemala Weekly Food Expenditures $75.70 Using the example of Guatemala, complete the Pre-Work assignment by analyzing their food consumption and drawing conclusions about their level of development and lifestyle.

Hungry Planet Lab The hungry planet pictures will be rotating throughout the classroom and during this time, you will analyze 15 countries and their typical diets. You will have about 4 minutes for each country’s picture When analyzing the pictures, you need to record the following: Weekly food expenditures Level of development (their HDI score will tell you if they are less developed, newly industrialized, or more developed) HDI + draw that population pyramid’s shape Observations List at least 2-3 things that you notice about their food choices Also, make sure to look at the additional information for that country so you understand how their development impacts their lifestyle
