ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY A BIBLIOGRAPHY is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) a person has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "References" or "Works Cited" depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.). An ANNOTATION is a summary/evaluation. Therefore, an ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY includes a summary and evaluation of each of the sources. WRITING STANDARD 8 ASSESS THE USEFULNESS OF EACH SOURCE IN ANSWERING THE RESEARCH QUESTION; AVOID PLAGIARISM AND FOLLOW A STANDARD FORMAT FOR CITATION.

All good bibs do the following: Summarize – Evaluate – Reflect WHY CREATE AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY? Helps you organize your thoughts Builds a perspective of what other people are doing in the field of your topic. Reinforces a good skill to build for college, where you will more than likely complete several before graduating with a Bachelor’s, more with an advanced degree. Keeps you from going back to your source, if done well. All good bibs do the following: Summarize – Evaluate – Reflect

WHY AN MLA ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY? MLA – Modern Language Association Using MLA Style properly makes it easier for readers to navigate and comprehend a text by providing familiar cues when referring to sources and borrowed information. Editors and instructors also encourage everyone to use the same format so there is consistency of style within a given field. Abiding by MLA's standards as a writer will allow you to: Provide your readers with cues they can use to follow your ideas more efficiently and to locate information of interest to them Allow readers to focus more on your ideas by not distracting them with unfamiliar or complicated formatting Establish your credibility or ethos in the field by demonstrating an awareness of your audience and their needs as fellow researchers (particularly concerning the citing of references) LANGUAGE STANDARD 3 WRITE AND EDIT WORK SO THAT IT CONFORMS TO THE GUIDELINES IN AN MLA STYLE MANUAL.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY The first element of your ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY is the CITATION of the source’s bibliographic information. Depending on the type of source, this can include: Author(s) Title of Source Title of Larger Works in which the Source Was Found Publication Date Publisher Place of Publication Volume/Issue Number Editor(s) Translator Date of Access Page numbers Medium of Publication Etc. LANGUAGE STANDARD 3 WRITE AND EDIT WORK SO THAT IT CONFORMS TO THE GUIDELINES IN AN MLA STYLE MANUAL.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY With print sources, most CITATION information can be found on the cover and/or on one of the first few pages on the source. CITATION information for electronic sources can be more difficult to locate, but oftentimes, they are at the bottom of a webpage. If a required element can’t be found, then omit it from your CITATION, but the less elements available, then the less likely your source is reliable/authoritative. (Use “n.d.” when no publication date is provided and “n.p.” when no publisher is given.) LANGUAGE STANDARD 3 WRITE AND EDIT WORK SO THAT IT CONFORMS TO THE GUIDELINES IN AN MLA STYLE MANUAL.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY MLA Style Formatting calls for very specific evidence, in a very specific order, in a very specific format. Use guides to match your source type with the proper format. BASIC FORMAT FOR A BOOK: Author. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. Morrison, Toni. Beloved. New York: Vintage, 2004. Print. If the book had more than one author, a translator, was a volume in a series, etc., then that information needs to be included too. Consult a Citation Guide to see how to include that information. LANGUAGE STANDARD 3 WRITE AND EDIT WORK SO THAT IT CONFORMS TO THE GUIDELINES IN AN MLA STYLE MANUAL.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY MLA Style Formatting calls for very specific evidence, in a very specific order, in a very specific format. Use guides to match your source type with the proper format. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY MLA Style Formatting calls for very specific evidence, in a very specific order, in a very specific format. Use guides to match your source type with the proper format. BASIC FORMAT FOR A PAGE ON A WEBSITE: Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY All other citation types follow similar formats. Just find your source on the list and fill in the appropriate format. Other Types of Citations: DVDs Personal Interviews Tweets/Status Updates Photographs Podcasts Pamphlets/Brochures Etc. Things to Keep in Mind: Hanging Indent Alphabetize Last name, First name: Maloney, Rachel Date Format (Day Month Year): 12 Apr. 2011 Page Format (Don’t repeat numbers) 12-7, not 12-17 and 254-67, not 254-267 Use n.d. and n.p. when publication date and publisher aren’t available. Each ANNOTATION will have a paragraph which includes: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY : INCLUDES YOUR RESEARCH QUESTION/TOP AND 5 ANNOTATED CITATIONS. ANNOTATIONS are placed just below the citation. They are written in complete sentences/paragraph form. Each ANNOTATION will have a paragraph which includes: Summary Evaluation Reflection LANGUAGE STANDARD 3 WRITE AND EDIT WORK SO THAT IT CONFORMS TO THE GUIDELINES IN AN MLA STYLE MANUAL.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY SUMMARY: Begin your annotation with a summary paragraph. The first sentence should provide the MAIN IDEA of the source. Then extend your summary with two or three more sentences elaborating on significant details that are relevant to your research question. In Candy Freak, Steve Almond presents a history of the candy industry in 20thcentury America.  After describing his love of candy and chocolate in particular, Almond takes the reader on a tour of candy factories across America while discussing how three large corporations (Hershey, M&M/Mars, and Nestle) managed to squeeze out hundreds of candy brands that were produced regionally in this country. LANGUAGE STANDARD 3 WRITE AND EDIT WORK SO THAT IT CONFORMS TO THE GUIDELINES IN AN MLA STYLE MANUAL.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY EVALUATION: The next paragraph assesses the authority, accuracy, objectivity, and currency of the source. Basically, you’re proving that this is an appropriate and trustworthy source for your research. Steve Almond has published 10 novels and worked as a journalist for major newspapers. Candy Freak was a New York Times best-seller and an Alex Award Winner, and was published in 2004. The information seems reliable, but Almond does not provide a bibliography for his book so there’s no way to verify his information. The writer’s personal tours through candy factories and conversations with candy makers do lend reliability to his work. However, some negative bias can be detected toward the big three candy corporations. LANGUAGE STANDARD 3 WRITE AND EDIT WORK SO THAT IT CONFORMS TO THE GUIDELINES IN AN MLA STYLE MANUAL.
