8.1 – Basic Geometric Ideas Identify attributes of basic geometric figures

Set the Purpose Watch video. You have worked with geometry shapes in previous math classes. Today you will revisit some fundamental ideas that will be used throughout your work with geometry and measurement. Where in life do you see points, lines, and line segments?

Pose the Problem Each person should draw a house using points and line segments. Do not show anyone your drawing. Now have your partner try to draw your house by giving a verbal step-by-step description of what it looks like. Then repeat with the other partner and house. Compare drawings and discuss.

Math Vocabulary – pg. 200 A point is an exact location in space. A line is a straight path of points that goes on forever in 2 directions. A line segment is part of a line having 2 endpoints. A plane is an endless flat surface. A ray is part of a line. It has only one endpoint and extends forever in one direction.

Math Vocabulary Parallel lines never cross and stay the same distance apart. Intersecting lines pass through the same point. Perpendicular lines are intersecting lines that form square corners.
