Philosophical Chairs

Overview: The purpose of Philosophical Chairs is to promote discussion. Students are encouraged to keep an open mind. The class will be presented with a topic, which has no right or wrong answer. You will sit on one side of the classroom or the other, depending on your initial feelings on the topic. You may switch sides throughout the discussion based upon strong arguments made by either side. No one will acknowledge any move – it’s not a team game where you are trying to “win” the argument. You may be called on for your opinion, so be ready to speak!

Basic Rules: At the beginning, you may stand in the middle if you are unsure. After each side has made a statement, you must sit on one side or the other. You do not need to raise your hand to speak; it’s a conversation. However, do not cut anyone off while they are speaking. Once you have spoken, you may not speak again until two other people on your side have spoken. You may move sides after the completion of any statement – show your support or agreement with your feet!

Practice Round Topic: Dogs are the best pets

Topic: Should we concede to aggressors in order to keep peace? Questions to consider: Was Sony right to pull “The Interview” from theatres after online threats? Is it right to prevent Americans from traveling to the Middle East due to ISIS attacks? Is there a difference between conceding to an aggressive country and a bully at school? Are there long term benefits of giving in vs. standing your ground?
