The Berlin Conference Where: Berlin, Germany When: 1884-1885 Who: 14 European nations. African leaders not invited. Purpose: to divide up Africa among the European nations. to avoid potential conflict in Africa between European nations.

AFRICA Christian Missionaries were the first “explorers” of Africa’s interior Nations then sent representatives to negotiate with African chiefs Contracts were in English Those who refused were shot Chiefs were forced to give up their land In the 1870s, European powers looked to fully colonize Africa. The map shows how Imperialist nations divided the continent.

King Leopold II of Belgium Commissioned the explorer Henry Stanley to secure agreements from the tribes who inhabited the Congo Basin in Africa (1879-84). Belgian rule of the Congo was extremely nasty.

“Heart of Darkness” Anticolonialism Marlow’s & Conrad’s 1889-90 journey into “Heart of Darkness” Joseph Conrad about colonialism: “The conquest of the earth, which mostly means the taking it away from those who have a different complexion or lightly flatter noses than ourselves, is not a pretty thing when you look into it too much.” In an essay Conrad calls the colonial exploitation of the Congo; “the vilest scramble for loot that ever dis-figured the history of human conscience.”

Imperialism in Asia:

Types of Imperialism in Asia: Full Colony: A foreign country has total political and economic control of a region. Native people have no influence in their own government. Protectorate: A foreign country does not directly control a region, but they provide military protection in return for economic and political influence. Sphere of Influence: A foreign country does not protect or control a region, but does have exclusive economic rights.
