CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling CASE STUDY CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling

The case review must be structured using each of the 7 headings below. It should provide a coherent summary of your therapeutic counselling work with ONE client (covering at least six sessions) You may give examples of what was said, if relevant, but the case review should not be a transcript nor should it be a session by session account. You need to give specific examples from your work, throughout. Confidentiality must be ensured at all times.

The case review should be 3000-3500 words reflect a sound underpinning of integrated PC theory and skills evidence a clear understanding of the therapeutic relationship and the therapeutic process within a PC framework give a clear sense of your client and your own self awareness show a mature use of supervision appropriate to the integration of PC theory and skills

Marking scheme: Each section of the case review is awarded between 0 and 3 marks on the following basis: 0 = no evidence 1 = minimum evidence 2 = satisfactory evidence 3 = robust evidence Candidates must achieve at least ONE mark in each section and an overall mark of 11 out of 21 to be assessed as Proficient. Candidates can be awarded ½ marks. Please note that each section carries equal marks (3) so you are advised to take this into account when deciding how much to write in each section.

1 Context and boundaries of work 3 marks Describe the context in which you work showing understanding of the boundaries and ethical framework for independent practice. Guidance: The assessor is looking for  A description of the context and setting where you provide therapeutic counselling  Evidence of how you established a client/counsellor agreement/contract.  Explanation of how an ethical framework informs your work as an independent practitioner.

2. Assessment/diagnosis (3marks) Use a coherent framework to arrive at an initial assessment of your client. Guidance: The assessor is looking for An evaluation of how you initially assessed your client, with clear reference to the service level framework and your core theoretical approach.

3 Awareness of diversity issues 3 marks Work with awareness of diversity issues. Guidance: The assessor is looking for Your reflection on issues of difference and diversity relevant to the work between you and this client Evidence of how you worked with these issues, making reference to your own and the client’s implicit processes.

4. Development of the therapeutic relationship 3 marks Show how you worked with implicit aspects of the therapeutic relationship and the therapeutic process. Guidance: The assessor is looking for  Your critical reflections on how the therapeutic relationship was established, maintained and developed with reference to implicit patterns and processes.  Evidence of how your understanding of the relationship, within the context of your core approach, informed and enhanced the depth of your work with this client. .

5. Use of self awareness 3 marks Reflect on how your self awareness impacted on the therapeutic work. Guidance: The assessor is looking for  Critical reflections on your own process - your response to your client and your impact on the therapeutic work.  An evaluation of how insights from own personal work enhanced the therapeutic process.

6. Theory underpinning skills 3 marks Work at depth within a coherent framework of theory and skills. Guidance: The assessor is looking for  Evidence of how you have consistently and coherently integrated your theoretical understanding and use of skills/interventions to work at depth with this client.  A critical evaluation of your work at level 5 as an independent counsellor with this client.

7. Use of supervision 3 marks Critically reflect on your use of supervision. Guidance: The assessor is looking for  Critical reflection on how you used supervision, as an independent counsellor, to explore key issues from your work with this client.  Integration of insights and learning from supervision into your work with this client.

Summary 3000 - 3500 words 7 sections with equal marks so the words need to reflect this Each section has is marked out of 3 To be marked proficient the pass mark is 11 or above. All work needs to be referenced with the Harvard System of Referencing. You are allowed to submit one draft copy for feedback

Exercise Working in pairs: Plan your case study and identify the criteria that you could claim for this piece of work. Write out a brief plan of your case study and discuss what you can incluse in each section. Discussion
