Empires of Mesopotamia

Kingdom of Akkad (2340 B.C.) KING SARGON Conquered all of the Sumerian City-States This became the 1st Empire in the world including all of the Mesopotamia Areas Lasted more than 200 years.

Amorites (1800’s B.C.) Western region of Mesopotamia Babylon- 1792 B.C. King Hammurabi captured all the cities from the Persian Gulf through the Tigris- Euphrates Valley to the Mediterranean Sea

Hammurabi's Code Believed to be a just ruler Created a set of laws known as Hammurabi’s code Dealt with all areas of life( Business, Personal, Marriage, Taxes, Government to name a few)

Assyrian Empire (900’s B.c.) Large empire that covered present day TURKEY,SYRIA, IRAN, AND IRAQ. Very large and powerful army in the 900’s the army began conquering the area’s of Mesopotamia

The Assyrian Army HIGHLY TRAINED AND VERY DISIPLINED Normally 50,000 soldiers for each battle Fought with slingshots, bows and arrows, swords, and spears KNOWN for their harshness and brutality Robbed, set crops on fire, destroyed towns and cities.

Assyrian Government Divided areas into provinces The government built roads, collected taxes, and carried out all laws In this ruling everything was fair and equal even being a large empire.

Assyrian Religion and lifestyle Polytheistic Built large temples to worship all gods. Created one of the worlds first library.

The fall of the Assyrian empire Ruled for a total of 300 years 627- King of the Chaldean lead a revolt against the Assyrians and started a war. 612- The Assyrian capital is taken by the Chaldean and Assyria's empire crumbles.

The Chaldean Empire Had growing power fro 650 BC until they over took the Assyrians in 612 BC. King Nebuchadnezzar ruled moved capital city to Babylon

Babylon World’s largest and richest city during this time period. Created massive Ziggurats in the center of the city for worship. Hanging Gardens of Babylon considered 1 of the 7 wonders of the Ancient World

The running of the Empire Empire stretched from the Persian Gulf to Egypt Collected high taxes to maintain the city and its lifestyle. Grew very wealthy through trade.

Scientific Advancements Astronomers studied and began mapping the stars and the planets. Created Sundials to measure time First to follow a 7 day week

The fall of the Chaldean empire After Nebuchadnezzar died the empire had multiple weak rulers. The empire suffered with a decrease in trade and poor harvests The Persians took advantage and conquered however they allowed the Chaldean to keep their unique culture!
