Review for Earth Science Chapter 10 Energy Resources Vincent Eblacas Untalan Middle School SY 2017 to 2018

Earth Science Chapter 10 Energy Resources Explain what is fuel and some of the common energy forms associated with it.(25 points) Fuel is any substance that contains energy. It can create different forms of energy such as 1) Sound 2) Light 3) heat 4) motion.

Earth Science Chapter 10 Energy Resources Explain the idea of combustion. (5 points) Combustion is when fuel is burnt. Combustion typically involves fumes which produce a bigger explosion because it releases more energy.

Earth Science Chapter 10 Energy Resources Explain the idea of electricity production. (5 points) Electrical production is creating a flow of electricity. Turbines do this by having a magnet spin inside a bunch of metal coils.

Earth Science Chapter 10 Energy Resources Explain the 3 different types of fossil fuels. (15 point) • Coal is a solid form of fossil fuel---it can be broken down into other products than fuel. • Oil is a liquid form of fossil fuel----it can be broken down into many other products other than fuel • Natural gas is the gas form of fossil fuel----it is primarily a fuel source but the gases created when burned can be used for other purposes.

Earth Science Chapter 10 Energy Resources Explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy (10 points) • Renewable energy are sources which are easily replaced or regenerated such as solar power, hydropower and wind. • Non-renewable energy are sources which are not easily replaced such as fossil fuels.

Earth Science Chapter 10 Energy Resources Explain the 5 major sources of renewable energy (25 points) • Solar---energy from the sun • Wind---moving air • Water---moving water • Geothermal---heat from the earth • Biomass----materials from living or once living organisms.

Earth Science Chapter 10 Energy Resources Explain the difference between fission and fusion energy. (10 points) • Fission is the splitting of the atom which creates energy. The bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the first major application of fission power. • Fusion is the combining of atoms which happens in the sun. Hydrogen is combined to form helium which creates a tremendous amount of energy

Earth Science Chapter 10 Energy Resources Explain the difference between conservation and efficiency. (10 points) • Conservation is reducing energy use. • Efficiency is making the best use of the energy used.
