Energy Resources Objective 22/09/2018 Objective To describe a range of energy resources, their uses and environmental impact.

Starter Think of as many sources of energy as you can think of. Discuss the sources you have thought of with the person next to you. Share your or your partner’s knowledge with the rest of the class. Extension: Think and discuss with a partner where most of the energy is originally coming from. Energy resources: nuclear power, fossil fuels, hydroelectricity, wind power, wave power, tidal power, solar panels, photovoltaic cells, geothermal energy and biofuels. Discuss with pupils the fact that the majority of the energy we use comes from the sun in different ways.

Energy and the Sun The Sun The Sun is the original source of most energy resources. Plants store the Sun’s energy through photosynthesis. Animals then eat the plants. Briefly explain that Oil, Gas and Coal originally come from dead plants and animals.

Types of energy resource There are two types of energy resource: Renewable Non-renewable Renewable energy resources will never run out (at least not for a very long time), or can be regenerated. Examples: w___ and S__. Non-renewable energy resources will eventually run out – once used they cannot be used again. Examples: c___ and o_. oal il ind un

Energy resources in the UK Energy resources can be divided into two types: Renewable (e.g. hydroelectric); Non-renewable (e.g. coal, oil, nuclear and natural gas).

Energy Resources Research Uses Advantages Disadvantages Fossil Fuels 60% of the electricity generated in the UK comes from fossil fuels. We can generate a lot of electricity from burning fossil fuels. Produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas which increases global warming. Spread the Energy Resources Factsheets over 6 stations around the room. Allow pupils about 4 mins at each station to fill out the Energy Resources Worksheet. Support: For pupils who need extra support, they could be assisted by pointing out examples, from each fact sheet, to them while they are completing the task. Pick on pupils to contribute information they had found about each energy resource. Tell pupils to write down any extra information they had not written down.

Plenary – True/False F Fossil Fuels are a renewable resource of energy. Fossils Fuels account for about 60% of the UK’s electricity production. Burning Fossil Fuels produces pollutants which increase global warming. A minority of the energy resources on Earth can trace their energy back to the Sun. Solar cells converts light energy directly into electrical energy. Animals get their energy from food. T T F T T
