How It All Began? Jollibee started out as an ice cream parlor in 1975 in Cubao, Quezon City. The owner of the shop, Tony Tan Caktiong, was only 22 years old when he decided to use his family’s savings and open two ice cream parlors in Manila. It instantly became a hit, thanks to bigger scoops of ice cream that the store provides, plus their excellent customer service. Later on, Tony’s team decided to reach a bigger market by transforming his shop into a burger chain in 1978.

Why Jollibee? In a published article by The Economist, Jollibee CEO and owner Tony Tan Caktiong has mentioned that the cheerful bee mascot of the giant food chain represents the Filipino spirit that we all carry—jolly, hard-working, and optimistic. However, before Tan Caktiong finally decided to settle for the name Jollibee, they went through several spelling revisions. The first name of the store was Jollibee ; this was later changed into Jollibee, and later on, the name became Jollibee.
