Quick Fire The Spanish were the first Europeans to settle in the New World. The Conquistadors conquered a lot of land very quickly. Think of at least two reasons why Spain had a hard time ruling its newly conquered lands.

3 Waves of Europeans Explorers: Christopher Columbus (raided, traded, left) Conquistadors: Cortes & Pizarro (Conquered) Settlers: New Mexico (came, settled, lived)

Before Spanish Explorers

After Spanish Conquistadors

After Spanish Settlers Latin America (Latino or Hispanic)

Spanish Frontier The Spanish settled the places where they found the most Natives first. The Spanish did this because it was where they found the best land for farming Frontier: land on the borders of Spanish rule where Native Americans were not yet conquered.

Spanish New Mexico Zuni Settlement Pueblo Settlement Hopi Settlement

Spanish Pueblo “Pueblo” is “town” in Spanish. These were Spanish settlements built over Native towns

Spanish Mission Spanish Missions were settlements lead by a Catholic priest. Natives were forced to resettle on them for religious instruction Spanish California

Spanish Presidios Presidios were forts where Spanish soldiers were stationed. Presidios were used to control natives on the frontier and protect Spanish settlers from native raids.
