A FEW FACTS FACEBOOK is the most popular social networking site There are about 1.2 Billion Facebook users worldwide The average amount of time a person spends monthly on FB is 15 hours and 33 minutes About 70 billion pieces of content are shared on FB each month 98% of 18-24 year olds use social media Over 60% of 13-17 year olds have at least 1 profile on a social networking site

Benefits of Social Networking Staying connected to friends Developing new social contacts with peers with similar interests Sharing content of self-expression such as art work, music and political views Developing and expressing your individual identity

Potential Risks of Social Networking Bullying online – “cyber-bullying” Sharing too much information Vulnerability to predatory adults Sharing photos or videos that you later regret Exposure to large amounts of commercial advertisements which may not be age appropriate Risk of identity theft Reduce amount of time for physical activity

Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology users should know to use technology appropriately

is more than just a teaching tool; Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology. 

Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use.  Too often we are seeing students as well as adults misusing and abusing technology but not sure what to do. DIGITAL ACCESS DIGITAL COMMERCE Using the internet or social medical networking sites to engage in bullying – recording videos and taking pictures and posting them without permission. DIGITAL COMMERCE Forcing someone to provide passwords to accounts where you can download and make purchases. (Like taking someone’s lunch money)

DIGITAL COMMUNICATION Using social medial or social access, e-mail, texts or blogs to send offensive, rude and insulting messages. DIGITAL LITERACY Understanding what bullying & cyberbullying is. Understanding the consequences of bullying and recognizing when one is being a bully and when one is being bullied.

DIGITAL ETIQUETTE DIGITAL LAW Just as in digital communication, saying mean things and improper things via social networking sites, text and email. Also, recording videos of embarrassing moments, fights, arguments and posting them for others to see. Being extremely impolite through social and electronic devices. DIGITAL LAW Threatening; Sexting; distributing information about another that is derogatory and untrue true posting in on a web page. These could lead to serious consequences with the law

DIGITAL Rights & Responsibilities Outing & Trickery – Sharing someone’s secrets. Seeing threat messages or inappropriate messages, witnessing harassment and ignoring it. DIGITAL Health & Wellness Cyber Stalking that leads to threats or harm that makes a person afraid to the point where a person suffers emotional and physical harm.

DIGITAL SECURITY Impersonation; hacking, breaking into other’s emails an sending messages. Pretending to be someone you are not.
