Fiduceo Introduction

Fiduceo – Key Idea FIDUCEO aims to develop and apply a rigorous metrology* of Earth observation for climate data records The project is focused on the uncertainty budget comprehensive and realistic; communicated using internationally agreed standards; traceable from detector to gridded geophysical product; Traceability here we talk about the property of a measurement result whereby the result can be related to a reference through a documented unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to the measurement uncertainty Note reference does not have to be SI, only community agreed; propagated rigorously across product levels. The project will provide Fundamental Climate Data Records (FCDRs) and Thematic Climate Data Records (TCDRs) with traceable uncertainties. *Metrology is the science of measurement and measurement uncertainty

FIDUCEO FCDRs Next 2 slides just shows the main FCDRS, CDRs to be developed. Bear in mind that there will be also the documentation/ tools/ cook books to go with them.. FCDRs of AVHRR and HIRS for AATSR-to-SLSTR gap period – Month 36 (Feb 2018) – not on timeline slide, depends on availability of the SLSTR data Also - FCDRs of AVHRR and HIRS for AATSR-to-SLSTR gap period

Fiduceo related Requirements

Requirements User requirements from the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) re-calibrated time-series shoud include past/present/future instruments; re-calibrated data from multiple instruments should be verified on consistency in overlapping regions and/or during overlapping observation periods; re-calibrated data should be provided with information on random errors and time-dependent biases; re-calibrated data should be provided in common file formats (e.g. BUFR, NetCDF) using internationally agreed metadata standard; User Requirements from Fiduceo user survey 40 user requirements defined regarding Content, Documentation, Access, Process and Recommendations [1]. E.g.: “FIDUCEO-4: FCDR uncertainty information must include a description of error correlations sufficient for CDR producers to account for error correlations propagated from the FCDR in their CDR.” [1] G.Holl et al. 2015: http://www.fiduceo.eu/content/user-requirements-report

MVIRI FCDR

Spectral Response Function Reconstruction Simulated count comparison Measured count Optimize SRF Convolution with (prior) SRF WP partners: Courtesy: Rayference

MVIRI VIS Pre-Flight METEOSAT-2 METEOSAT-7 Relative responsivity (max=1) Wavelength (um)

METEOSAT-7 Pre-flight Recovered Relative responsivity (max=1) Wavelength (um)

METEOSAT- 2 Pre-flight Recovered Relative responsivity (max=1) Wavelength (um)

METEOSAT 7-4 The reconstructed spectral response curves are broadly similar to the MET7 prelaunch characterisation. All include an error covariance matrix.

METEOSAT-2 The reconstructed spectral response is very different from the MET7 MVIRI prelaunch characterisation everywhere. The degradation is stronger in the blue than in the red, and slightly faster in the beginning than later in the end. In fact, the shape of the reconstructed spectral response is much more similar to the MET2 prelaunch response than to that of MET7. The reconstruction will be redone using the MET2 prelaunch characterisation as prior information.

METEOSAT-2 The normalised count residuals show some seasonal variations. The switch of the gain setting in May 1987 does not cause any residual artefacts. Desert, Ocean, DCC (ocean), DCC (land)

Wrap-up

Brief progress to date: Defined release versions for phased FCDR delivery; pre-beta, beta, Released pre-beta versions of the FCDRs to early users for testing. Delivered FCDR Uncertainty analysis documentation to the commission (“D2_2” – 5 documents) Continued working on finalising the format/content of the FCDRs. Progressed the matchups needed for harmonisation process. Opening up of results and efforts of Harmonisation Finalised plans and advertised the first workshop (April 2018). (Could also add – outreach to external agencies working well – ESA workshop on Uncertainties was well received and commented on by project officer and reviewer)

To do in 2018/2019 To complete FCDR Harmonised Betas (AVHRR, HIRS, MW)/ Beta (MVIRI) and deliver to beta users to test To consolidate CDR uncertainty analysis across the CDR teams To consolidate new CDR format To create CDRs and issue to beta users To present FIDUCEO analysis at Workshop 2 and the feedback from beta users To write up produce user guides and cookbooks To ensure continuation of project interaction with external agencies. Still a lot to do. 3 short bullet points – doesn’t reflect the substantial amount of effort involved here!! Consolidate CDR uncertainty analysis across the CDR teams Consolidate new CDR format Create CDRs and issue to beta users Ensure continuation of project interaction with external agencies. (like GSICS….. ;-) )
