Students will review and practice using the Cornell Method for Taking. Students will reflect and understand strategies for effective reading comprehension. Students will review tips for reducing Test Anxiety.

Study Skills Checklist In a moment, I will ask you to complete a checklist so you can learn more about your Study Skills. This will highlight areas of strength and limitations. Read each statement and determine if it applies to you. If it does, place a check next to the Y. Time Management - 1, 2, and 3. Concentration - 4, 5, and 6. Listening & Note taking - 7, 8, and 9. Reading - 10, 11, and 12. Exams - 13, 14, and 15. Reading - 16, 17, and 18. Writing Skills -19, 20, and 21. Take a minute to write down any areas where you have 2 or more Y’s.

The Cornell Note Taking System Step 1 – Divide paper into 2 columns using only one side of each loose leaf paper. Notes go on the right; recall goes on the left Step 2 – Take Notes Step 3- Review Notes within 24 Hours. Not sure what to write as being important? Try this tips: Facts, figures, dates are usually important. “That’s interesting” “That might be interesting to someone else” How important is it to review your notes after class? Everyone, no matter how strong they think they are when it comes to remembering information, suffers from what researchers refer to as the “Forgetting Curve”. Adapted from: https://www.educationcorner.com/cornell-note-taking-system.html

Forgetting Curve https://www.educationcorner.com/the-forgetting-curve.html

Let’s Practice “March of the Dinosaurs” Use the Cornell Method to take notes during the video. Try to keep up. Remember, only write what you think is most important to remember. Take notes as if your grade depended on it. Use one of the note pages that are already on your desk. Title and Date today’s lesson Number the page along the right hand side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=va_NXwxSoSw

Reading Comprehension Fact or Fiction: Many people who feel like they are not strong readers, often feel that way because they do not know how to read effectively. Define your Purpose Identify what the main topics are. Set a goal for yourself to stay on task. Read the Text Read out loud. Take Notes/Highlight Important Concepts Writing something down is an effective memory technique (auditory learner). Pre-Reading Survey Just read the chapter titles and subtitles. Read the Focus Questions. Read through the boldfaced words. Look at the visual aids. Check out the end of chapter material. Post-Reading Review Take a minute to identify your take-away. Save space for your take-away area in your notes. What are some strategies for reading effectively? Adapted from: https://www.educationcorner.com/reading-comprehension.html

Intense Study Sessions How Do You Study? Intense Study Sessions Set a Goal 1-2 min. Decide what you want to accomplish in your study session Study with Focus 30-50 min. Interact with Material – organize, summarize, concept map, re-read, fill-in notes, reflect. Reward Yourself 10-15 min. Take a break – go for a walk, get a snack, relax. Review 5 min. Summarize or wrap up what you just studied. Everyone studies differently based on how they learn. Check out the handout based on your learning method, and try a new strategy.

Tips for Reducing Test Anxiety Exercise – relieves stress and increases mental function/energy. Breathe… try to relax. Don’t cram. Be prepared. Develop good study habits. Get good rest – not only the night before a test, but the whole week leading up to it. Eat well before a big test. What are some effective ways to not be anxious about an upcoming test? Study Skills Quick Quiz Take a paper and hand it down the row. You will have five minutes to complete this quick quiz. Please put your name on the top. What are some of your reflections on the Quick Quiz? Did you feel anxious? Did you remember any strategies? How did you do on the quiz? Thumbs up if we accomplished our goals: Students will have an understanding of their limitations when it comes to different study skills. Students will review and practice using the Cornell Method for Taking. Students will reflect and understand strategies for effective reading comprehension. Students will review tips for reducing Test Anxiety. Don’t forget, this workshop and all workshops are available on the Guidance website, www.solancoguidance.weebly.com
