Brain Structures

The Outer Lobes Includes: Parietal Lobe-receives and processes sensory information from the body including calculating location and speed of objects. Occipital Lobe-processes visual data and routes it to other parts of the brain for identification and storage. Frontal Lobe- organizes responses to complex problems, plans steps to an objective, searches memory for relevant experience, adapts strategies to accommodate new data, guides behavior with verbal skills and houses working memory. Temporal Lobe-controls memory storage area, emotion, hearing, and, on the left side, language.

The Hindbrain Located in the rear base of the skull, is involved in the most basic processes of life. Oldest Part of the human brain.Includes: Cerebellum- regulates and coordinates movement, posture and balance. Voluntary functions Medula- controls respiration, digestion, heart rate, and a variety of reflexes. Automatic functions Pons Spinal cord

The Hindbrain Pons-roles in your level of arousal or conciousness and sleep, relays sensory information to/from the brain, and controls autonomic functions Spinal cord- carries information up to the brain and instructions back down

The Limbic System "emotional brain" or "Old Mammalian Brain" emotions memory Structures: Hypothalamus-monitors numerous bodily functions such as blood pressure and body temperature, as well as controlling body weight and appetite. Thalamus- acts as a two-way relay station, sorting, processing, and directing signals from the spinal cord and mid-brain structures up to the cerebrum, and, conversely, from the cerebrum down the spinal cord to the nervous system behaviours with positive or negative feelings.

The Limbic System Structures continued: Amygdala-alert to the needs of basic survival including sex, emotional reactions such as anger and fear. Hippocampus-processes new memories for long-term storage.
