Indicators for a healthy age and size structure distribution: A Roadmap for D 3.3. MSFD CFP D 3.3 ICES Secretariat Iñigo Martinez inigo@ices.dk

D 3.3 age and size structure

D 3 Outstanding Issues, Resolution, Potential Time Frame D 3.3 Recommendations Not include D3.3 in GES assessment as yet To develop and test indicators for criterion 3.3: size distribution selectivity of fishery genetic effects.

D 3.3 Recommendations D3.3 indicators: size distribution: (State) - Proportion of fish larger than the mean size of first sexual maturation (Former 3.3.1) - 95% percentile of the fish length distribution observed in research vessel surveys (Former 3.3.3) selectivity of fishery (Pressure) Length50 (or age) at first capture Mean length in the catch genetic effects (State) - Size at first sexual maturation (Former 3.3.4) - TL50: Length at which half of the (female) population are mature.

D 3.3 Roadmap Indicators evaluation against criteria (ICES WKFOOWI and WGECO, 2014) With ref points if possible 2. Selection of indicators 3. Assessment against GES By WKMSFDD3-II 2016 2017

D 3.3 Roadmap Two dedicated workshops to deliver by 2017 Requires: Availability of data (requires data call) contrasting periods (productivity and exploitation) contrasting functionality and productivity (Guilds) contrasting regions (MSFD regions) 2016 2017

What is healthy? To derive reference points D 3.3 Challenges D 3.3 Indicators of age and size structure of populations What is healthy? To derive reference points How to use these indicators for management and what actions trigger in case of surveillance indicators Process for aggregation across area, criteria, descriptor…

D 3 Outstanding Issues, Resolution, Potential Time Frame D 3 Commercially exploited fish and shellfish Process: two open workshops, WGGES consultation, external peer review, ICES advice Recommendations: D3.1, D3.2 agreed. D3.3 not yet operational but revise to size distribution, selectivity of fishery and genetic effects. Not include D3.3 in GES assessment as yet. Outstanding Issues Resolution Potential Time Frame 1. No agreed methods for data poor assessments of D3.1 & D3.2 as yet. ICES is continuing to explore & develop approaches for CFP 2016 2. D3.3 not ready for GES assessment 3 stage roadmap proposed by ICES based on regional case example stocks, to be spread out when tested 2017
