Comparing Anatomy: Squid Creating the Squid Scienstructable What You Do: Once you have completed your key, begin the reading to determine what all of these structures do – many of them have the same function as human beings! Remember to use good reading strategies as you read. On your paper, write a brief description of the structure and/or function of each organ in the appropriate column. For example: Number Organ Color Function 1 Mantle Skin color Outer surface of body; covers major organs 2 Chromatophores Pigmented cells that can change color; located on the mantle © Getting Nerdy, 2012 to present All rights reserved

Comparative Anatomy: Squid Creating the Squid Scienstructable What You’ll need: Squid template Scissors Colored pencils Small amount of glue or glue stick Construction paper What You Do: Now it’s time to color your squid! Color the structures according to your key. Remember that you can color the SKIN of your squid ANY shades of COLOR and/or PATTERNS as a squid’s external features vary greatly. Once you are done coloring, follow the directions below to put your squid Scienstructable together. Be sure to follow the directions exactly! © Getting Nerdy, 2012 to present All rights reserved

Comparing Anatomy: Squid Creating the Squid Scienstructable What You Do: (continued...) Using scissors or a blade, CAREFULLY cut out your squid and all structures - no jagged edges! DO NOT cut off the tabs as you will use these to assemble your squid. Glue your Scienstructable Key and Function sheet to one side of your construction paper, placing glue on the back of the tab where is says GLUE HERE. You should be able to see both sides of your paper. To conserve paper, it is best if the pages are printed front to back. *All numbers and letters on your finished model should line up when pasted together, so please pay attention to how you glue your model together. © Getting Nerdy, 2012 to present All rights reserved

Comparing Anatomy: Squid Creating the Squid Scienstructable What You Do: (continued...) For all structures to be pasted down, you will apply glue to each tab as directed and match up the lettered tabs as follows: Find the DORSAL MANTLE and the INTERNAL MANTLE. Apply glue to the back of the INTERNAL piece and align it to the BACK side of the DORSAL MANTLE piece. When attached properly, you should be able to see the inside and outside of the dorsal surface of the squid. © Getting Nerdy, 2012 to present All rights reserved

Comparing Anatomy: Squid Creating the Squid Scienstructable What You Do: (continued...) Find the DORSAL SWIMMING FINS and the VENTRAL SWIMMING FINS. Fold the triangular tabs SF1 on the black line of the VENTRAL SWIMMING FINS so they are out of the way. Apply glue to the back of the VENTRAL SWIMMING FINS and align to the BACK side of the DORSAL SWIMMING FINS. When attached properly, you should be able to see the dorsal and ventral surface of the swimming fins and the tabs SF1 should be free. Apply glue to the tabs SF1 and attach the SWIMMING FIN ASSEMBLY by tabs SF1 to SF on the DORSAL MANTLE. © Getting Nerdy, 2012 to present All rights reserved

Comparing Anatomy: Squid Creating the Squid Scienstructable What You Do: (continued...) Find the VENTRAL MANTLE. Cut the VENTRAL MANTLE on the solid black line down the middle. Apply glue to the TOP of each tab M1 of the two VENTRAL MANTLE pieces. Fold the tabs under and attach the tabs M1 to M on the INTERNAL MANTLE. You should not be able to see the tab name when applied correctly. © Getting Nerdy, 2012 to present All rights reserved

Comparing Anatomy: Squid Creating the Squid Scienstructable What You Do: (continued...) Apply glue to the tab and attach the PEN by tab A1 over A on the INTERNAL MANTLE. Apply glue to the tab and attach the FUNNEL RETRACTOR MUSCLES by tabs F1 over F on the INTERNAL MANTLE. Find the VENTRAL HEAD/ARMS and the INTERNAL HEAD. Apply glue to the back of the INTERNAL HEAD piece and align it to the BACK side of the VENTRAL HEAD/ARMS piece. When attached properly, you should be able to see the inside and outside of the ventral surface of the squid. © Getting Nerdy, 2012 to present All rights reserved

Comparing Anatomy: Squid Creating the Squid Scienstructable What You Do: (continued...) Apply glue to the tab and attach the TENTACLES by tab T1 to T. **They should be facing the OPPOSITE direction of the VENTRAL HEAD/ARMS. Apply glue to the tab and attach the BUCCAL MASS/BEAK by tab D2 over D3 on the INTERNAL HEAD. Apply glue to the tab and attach the DORSAL HEAD/ARMS by tab D1 over D2 on the BUCCAL MASS/BEAK. When attached properly, you should be able to see both the dorsal and ventral sides of the head. Apply glue to the TOP of tab D3 of the HEAD ASSEMBLY and attach it FACE DOWN to tab A1 of the PEN. The DORSAL HEAD/ARMS/TENTACLES should be facing down and the VENTRAL HEAD/ARMS should be facing up toward you. © Getting Nerdy, 2012 to present All rights reserved

Comparing Anatomy: Squid Creating the Squid Scienstructable What You Do: (continued...) Apply glue to the tab and attach the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM by tab V1 over V on the VENTRAL HEAD ASSEMBLY. Find the appropriate reproductive GONADS based on your gender determination. If your squid is MALE, find the TESTES and attach them by tab O1 to O on the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. If your squid is FEMALE, find the OVARIES and attach them by tab O1 to O on the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. Apply glue to the tab and attach the CIRCULATORY/RESPIRATORY SYSTEM by tab O2 over O1 on the GONADS. Apply glue to the TOP of each tab F2 of the SIPHON. Fold the tabs under and attach the tabs F2 to F1 on the FUNNEL RETRACTOR MUSCLES. You should not be able to see the tab name when applied correctly. © Getting Nerdy, 2012 to present All rights reserved
