Agenda Hierarchies and Level based Measures In today’s session we will be talking about Hierarchies and Level based Measures

Dimension Hierarchies Establish levels for data groupings and calculations Provide paths for drill down Year Region Quarter Country Month City The Hierarchies in dimension tables allows for data groupings and calculations It Provides paths for drill down A great example is that days group into a month and Months group into a quarter and quarters group into years.. In other words, we can drill down from Year, to qtr to month to a detail day… Day Customer 5

A Dimension Can Have Hierarchies “Drill Down” to more detail by adding lower hierarchy “levels” Start with Measure Total Break down by Manager level A dimension can have many Hierarchies and each dimension can have different levels of hierarchies In this example we start with the total revenue and then we break it down by Manager and then by Supervisor and then by Employee.. Notice that the Grand total remains the same.. It is just that it is broken down by the levels of the hierarchies. Then by Supervisor level Total remains constant unless filtered Then by Employee Level

A Dimension Can Have Multiple Hierarchies All Time Year Fiscal Year Quarter Fiscal Quarter Month Fiscal Month Week A dimension can have multiple hierarchies and the drill paths could be different …This is a perfect example where a Day rolls up either to a month or a week.. It Then rolls up to a Fiscal Month or Calendar month and you can see the progression upwards.. Day

Each Hierarchy Level Can Have “Attributes” Attributes enable analysis of many business questions “Who was hired in 2005?” “Do Associates have higher per-person revenue than Principal employees?” This example illustrates that each level within a hierarchy can have attributes… Attributes help in analyzing business problems… Employee Level Employee “Hire Date” Attribute Employee “Type” Attribute Employee “Position” Attribute

“Dimensionality” Hierarchy Level Dimension Time Customer Market Order Product Org Total All 1 Year Segment Region Brand Manager 2 Qtr District LOB Supervisor 3 Month Area Type Employee 4 Week SKU 5 Day This illustrates the Dimensionality or it shows that not all dimensions have the same level granularity, for instance the time dimension goes to the detail day level which is 5 levels deep, whereas the customer dimension is only 2 levels deep.

Different Measures Can Have Different Dimensionality and Grain Dimension Level Time Customer Market Order Product Org Booked Amt Day SKU Employee Sales Forecast Qtr n/a Revenue Forecast All Region Brand Inventory Market Share Year Type This demonstrates that it is not necessary for the Measures to be all in the same grain or dimensionality, for example Sales Forecast is by Qtr, Customer, Market & Employee whereas the Revenue Forecast is by Qtr, All Customers, By region and by Brand..
