What is motion and how do we know it occurred? when an object changes position over time when compared with a reference point Reference point- an object that appears to stay in place Ex: mountains, buildings, & trees

Average speed= total distance total time What is speed and how do we calculate it? Average speed= total distance total time the rate at which an object moves SI Units- m/s, km/h

If you take a walk for 1. 5 hours and travel 7 If you take a walk for 1.5 hours and travel 7.5 km, what is your average speed? Average speed= total distance total time Average speed= 7.5 km 1.5 hrs Average speed= 5 km/h

Velocity Riddle: Two birds leave the same tree at the same time Velocity Riddle: Two birds leave the same tree at the same time. They both fly at 10 km/h for 1 hour, 15 km/h for 30 minutes, and 5 km/h for 1 hour. Why don’t they end up at the same destination????

What is velocity? The speed of an object in a certain direction *DIRECTION MATTERS!* Ex: 25 m/s forward 55 m/h south

When does velocity change? When an object’s speed or direction changes

The rate at which velocity changes What is acceleration? The rate at which velocity changes *The faster velocity changes, the greater the acceleration.* Acceleration= final velocity- starting velocity time it takes to change velocity SI Units- meters per second per second (m/s/s)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDP7Pty8Qnw

What are the 2 types of acceleration? Positive- velocity increases Negative (deceleration)- velocity decreases

Example of Acceleration How Velocity Changes A plane taking off Increase in speed A car stopping at a stop sign Decrease in speed Jogging on a winding trail Change in direction Wind gusting Driving around a corner Standing at Earth’s equator
