DO NOW List the 8 Life functions (very important things we need to do to stay alive)

Do Now: How is a cell like a city?

Conclusion A cell has parts called organelles that each have a specific job to do. If an organelle does not do its job the cell suffers and could die.

Building Blocks of Life Cells Building Blocks of Life

Cell Theory 1. The cell is the basic unit of structure and function.

2. Cells carry out the life functions Mr. Stranger

3. Cells only come from other cells

Do Now: Plant Animal 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Nucleus: Nucleolus: “Brain” of the cell, Gives the orders Makes Ribosomes

Ribosomes: Chromosomes: Synthesize proteins Contains DNA which is the Map/instructions for the cell

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Transports materials Throughout the cell Rough ER With ribosomes Smooth ER Without ribosomes

Mitochondria Chloroplast: Makes energy “Powerhouse of the cell” Photosynthesis occurs here

Cell Membrane Cell Wall Surrounds the cell Allows certain materials to enter Cell Wall Surrounds the cell Provides shape and support

Centriole: Lysosome: cytoplasm Involved in cell division Contains digestive enzymes To get rid of waste cytoplasm Jelly-like material That fills the cell

Package and process food Golgi Body Package and process food Vacuole Stores food/water

Sum UP what we learned Pick an organelle and tell which part of the cell city it would be.

Cell structure (organelle) Function Plant, Animal, Both Nucleus “Brain” of the cell, gives the orders Nucleolus Makes ribosomes

Ribosomes Makes proteins Both Chromosomes Made of DNA and contain the instructions for the cell Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Transports materials throughout the cell.

Mitochondria Makes energy “Powerhouse” Both Chloroplast Photosynthesis occurs here. Makes food. Plant only Cell membrane Surrounds the cell Only allows certain materials to enter- Semi-permeable

Cell Wall Provides shape and support Plant only Centriole Involved in cell division Animal only Lysosome Contains digestive enzymes to breakdown and get rid of waste Both

Cytoplasm Jelly-like material that fills the cell. Provides support Both Golgi Bodies Package and process food Vacuole Stores food or water

DO NOW List three differences between a plant and animal cell. 1. 2. 3.

DO NOW What are the three parts of the cell theory? Cells are the basic unit of structure and function for living organisms. Cells carry out the life functions. Cells only come from other cells.
