Meme of the day

Settlement of the Middle Colonies Henry Hudson was an Englishman who was employed by the Dutch. Hudson sailed up the Hudson river and explored the area. The Dutch soon built trading posts near Manhattan Island. The Dutch started a fur trade with the Iroquois. The Dutch gov’t chartered a new colony (under the Dutch West India Co.) known as New Netherland and named their capital New Amsterdam.

New York Why did the Dutch treat the natives with Respect? At first the Dutch colony had trouble attracting people. Eventually the colony was opened to anyone. The Germans, French, Scandinavians, and other Europeans soon came to New Netherland. The Dutch colony was open to all types of religions and attracted Protestants, Catholics, and Jews to the colony. The Dutch also treated the local natives with respect. Why did the Dutch treat the natives with Respect? 1)Iroquois had power in the region 2) Dutch didn’t want to conquer, just wanted to trade.

England Takes New Amsterdam The English did not want the Dutch between their northern and southern colonies. What were the colonies the English had at this time? A military force under the command of the Duke of York was sent to take over. York was the proprietor (owner) of the colony. New Netherlands was taken without firing a shot. The Duke of York soon renamed the colony New York.

Pennsylvania Land was also given to those owed money by King Charles II. William Penn’s father was owed 16,000 pounds, so he granted property in the New World: Pennsylvania and Delaware. .

Quakers William Penn – belonged to the protestant sect the Quakers. He wanted to establish a colony on these religious principles but did not let this be known. A) Equality B) Cooperation C) Religious toleration Quakers - No formal ministers and allowing anyone to speak as they were moved. Dressed plainly and refused to follow a social ranking system. They also believed in pacifism or refusing to serve in the military.

Penn’s “Holy Experiment” Society 1) Every male settler 50 acres of land and the right to vote. – No land owning aristocracy 2) He also formed a representative type of government. 3) Paid natives in full for their lands. 4) Penn also regulated trade with the natives 5) Formed a court with colonists and natives on the board.

Pennsylvania takes off Penn – never was financially successful and died in poverty. Penn’s “Holy Experiment” 1) He created the capital “City of brotherly love” 2) He recruited immigrants from all over Europe – advertisements were in all different languages. “Now I would have you well observe, that I am very sensible of the unkindness and injustice that has been too much exercised towards you by the people of these parts of the world, who have sought… to make great advantages by you, … sometimes to the shedding of blood… but I am not such a man… I have great love and regard for you, and desire to win and gain your love and friendship by a kind, just, and peaceable life.” Penn

The other colonies Lord Baltimore - Giving a charter of land would be named Maryland – became famous for its religious toleration law. Key Supporters of Charles II were given the land later named the Carolinas English Philanthropist James Oglethorpe – received a charter for a colony for those imprisoned for debt. – he named it Georgia

Georgia Named after King George II Prohibited Slavery and Rum These laws were reversed when the crown assumed direct control in 1752
