You and Your Teaching Role Joyce Weinsheimer, Associate Director for Faculty Development

Most teachers have been lifelong learners Most teachers have been lifelong learners. At some point in these journeys, teacher need to develop a personal understanding of what learning and teaching mean. Steve J. Thien

Ideas to Consider for “The Journey”

Shift the focus from you to your students.

Teach for learning. What do you want your students to know? What do you want your students to understand? What will your students be able to do with their knowledge at the end of the course?

Create Students that You Want to Teach What attributes do you want students to exhibit? My students will be… • curious • What behaviors do you want students to exhibit? My students will… • ask questions •

Recognize your domains of influence. Curriculum Classroom environment Activities Homework Assignments Feedback and Evaluation • Rules • Modeling

Engage in the Art of Getting What You Want • Experiment. • Gather feedback. • Adjust accordingly.

Good teaching is the creating of those circumstances that lead to significant learning in others. D.L. Finkel
