“Oakland fire death toll, at 36, likely to climb”

It's already one of the city's deadliest blazes, but Oakland, California, authorities say casualties are expected to rise as they continue throughout Monday morning to investigate the fire at the warehouse-turned-arts-space known as Ghost Ship. Authorities said this morning that firefighters were encountering obstacles in their search due to the precarious nature of the building's structure. At least 36 people have been confirmed dead, including teenagers, in a huge blaze that gutted a converted warehouse during an electronic dance party Friday night. It could take weeks to identify victims through DNA and dental records, he said. Officials have asked victims' families to preserve their loved ones' personal belongings including hairbrushes and toothbrushes that could contain DNA samples. The fire spread so quickly that residents had no time to help others. "By the time I was through the front doors, I could just see the flames coming and then they just engulfed the front archway of my studio," a resident said. "I looked back and I just saw smoke everywhere. I couldn't really see anything.”

In Other News Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced on Monday he would visit Pearl Harbor in late December with US President Barack Obama, just over 75 years after Japan's attack in 1941. He will be the first Japanese leader to visit the area since the end of World War II. "I will visit Pearl Harbor with President Obama. This will be a visit to soothe the souls of the victims. We should never repeat the ravages of the war.” The surprise attack on December 7, 1941, killed more than two thousand Americans and triggered the entry of the US into World War II. The announcement coincides with the 75th anniversary of the battle on Wednesday. It's official: MLB uniforms are getting new branding. The league announced on Monday that it signed a 10-year deal with Under Armour and Fanatics. Under Armour will replace Majestic Athletic as the MLB's official uniform provider, and Fanatics will handle the retail side for consumers. The new partnership is set to take effect in 2020. It's the first time Under Armour has signed a uniform deal with an entire pro sports league. Under Armour will provide players with on-field jerseys and uniforms as well as gear for training. It will also outfit MLB teams with fitness technology that's designed to improve performance.
