Alas! Ileal Interposition Surgery for Diabetes Prevention? Rexford S. Ahima, Rotonya Carr Gastroenterology Volume 138, Issue 7, Pages 2224-2226 (June 2010) DOI: 10.1053/j.gastro.2010.04.025 Copyright © 2010 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions
Figure 1 Ileal interposition (IT) surgery. A small segment of ileum is interposed, with its vasculature and innervation intact, into the proximal small intestine. This procedure exposes the interposed ileal segment to ingested nutrients, leading to increases in plasma GLP-1, PYY, insulin, and bile acid levels. IT surgery improves glucose tolerance and decreases plasma lipids and fat content in adipose tissue, liver, and muscle.
