Participants Adults: 72 participants Youth: 37 87% Female Most were immigrants Working class Spanish-dominant Primarily two-parent households Youth: 37 Almost 50/50 split in gender Range of middle school through high school Most were second generation English dominant (some ELLs)
Leisure Adults High focus on family time together Place value on activities that have some benefit for children Safe and “productive activities” of children High value on education Youth Friends and peers Family connections also valued and actively maintained Social time Place value on community involvement
Technology Adults Recognize importance and value of using technology Mix of “users” and “non-users” Concern and reluctance about children’s use of internet sites Youth High users of technology as part of leisure time Social networking Self-expression and identity-building
Perceptions of Science Adults Generally see science as valuable and important Generally positive associations with “scientist” Positive reactions to careers in science for their children, but see navigating the “system” is challenging Youth Associations with science = school studies Mixed associations with “scientist” and less positive than parents Disconnect between career aspirations and relationship to science
Environment High awareness of environmental problems as an issue that deserves attention Low understanding of actual environmental issues Unclear what actions individuals can take Adults tended to have great appreciation for nature. Community-focus regarding clean and safe neighborhoods
