Day 43 – Cellular Energy

“three” tri-

Science Fact of the Day: If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months, and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat up one cup of coffee.

Objective: The objective of class today is to understand the source of energy in the cell.

Title the next section of your notebook, “Cellular Energy” Title the next section of your notebook, “Cellular Energy”. Now let’s learn about some more cool physical properties…

What is energy? Describe everything you know about energy in 30 words.

Energy is the ability to do work Energy is the ability to do work. Without the ability to obtain and use energy, life would not exist.

Most of the energy on Earth comes from the sun in the form of light.

All the energy that comes to Earth leaves in the form of heat.

In between, energy can be trapped by living systems and can be used to do biological work.

Energy comes in many forms Energy comes in many forms. Some of them include: light, heat, sound, electricity, and chemical compounds.

To live, all organisms, including plants, must release the energy stored in sugars.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the principle chemical compound that cells use to store and release energy. ATP consists of three parts: adenine, a three-carbon sugar called ribose, and three phosphate groups.

The three phosphate groups are the key to ATP’s ability to store and release energy.

Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) is a compound that looks almost like ATP, except that it has two phosphate groups instead of three.

Cells store small amounts of energy by adding a phosphate group to ADP molecules producing ATP. Draw This!!!

The energy stored in ATP is released by breaking the chemical bond between the second and third phosphates.

Because ATP is ready to power the machinery of the cell it is often compared to a fully charged battery.

Cells can regenerate ATP from ADP as needed by using the energy stored in foods like glucose.

Draw an “energy chain” showing the movement of energy from the sun, to a biological system, and then back into space. Make sure to include the form of energy in each step. sun hay cow space light chemical heat

In summary, describe in 30 words why ATP is often compared to a rechargeable battery. Include the terms: energy ATP ADP
