MLA Formatting

Your paper should look something like this… Please note the double-spacing Font – Times New Roman Font size – 12 Point 1-inch margin all around Sam Jones (Your Name) Ms. Henderson English 3AP or 1301 DC– Class Period 18 October 2017 (Always the Final Due Date) Discrimination The pentagon has twice as many bathrooms as are necessary (Smith online). The famous government building was constructed in the 1940s when segregation laws required that separate bathrooms be installed for people of African descent. “This building is not the only American icon that harkens back to this embarrassing and hurtful time in our history.” Across the United States there are many examples of leftover laws and customs that reflect the racism that once permeated American society.

MLA If it is on your Works Cited page, it must be cited within the body of the text (in-text citation). In-text citation must match the Works Cited page. On average, you should have at least one in-text citation per page. 80% of the text is made up of your ideas and your opinion – not summarized from someone else and not copy and pasted from sources. You have to in-text cite even for a paraphrase (even when you don’t directly quote).

Thesis Try to avoid would, should, could (but it happens) – but must use collegiate language Avoid Second person - You Must stand alone – Be direct – Be succinct Cover your major point(s) Avoid – I believe, I think, etc. Make a firm statement – clearly define your opinion – don’t be vague (many things, a lot, big problem) No – “no duh” statements (Drug addiction is a big problem – Really?) The United States must make changes to improve its almost non-existent bilingual program today, so we, Americans, can be fitted more appropriately for the enormous hurdles of globalization tomorrow. Drug addiction has caused a significant increase in violent crimes. Legalized abortion on demand is essential and just in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the woman’s life.

Topics Ban on cigarette smoking Vaping Use of cell phone while driving Social Media Performance enhancing drugs for athletes Importance of high grades in college Cheating in high school Value of studying abroad Wild Card

Revising & Editing – 4 people Write you name at the top of the paper & Provide feedback 5 or more sources Alpha Order All info at top correct to include final due date Last name and page # in top right corner Title Times New Roman 12 pt – in all text Citation has all pertinent info 5-7 sentences Quick summary of article/source Evaluation of source – viability/reliability How it will support thesis

Author Based - Revising & Editing – 4 people Write Name at Top Remember – not everyone is going to love what you have written or will agree with it. Not just proofreading –review the paper as a whole. As a peer reader, you will offer specific and constructive criticism. Constructive Criticism = honest feedback – provide comments Can thesis stand alone? Does thesis match body – does body follow thesis points? Does Works Cited match in-text citation? Is there in-text citation? (Johnson online) (Smith 131) (“Our Past” 22). MLA Formatting perfect? Did they explain their reasoning – not just evidence but develop and reveal the process of reasoning behind the claim. Steps in logic should be clear in the structure. Identify the assumptions – Did they spell it out to the reader? Warrants – these are assumptions that lead you to call certain things evidence. A narrator’s remark; an obvious connection between life and work (Fitzgerald said he plagiarized from his life.). At least 4 full pages.
