#3 ~ Southwest Region Northern area of Mexico to southern foothills of the Rocky Mts. Most associated with Pueblo people (and Navajo)

Southwest cont… Pueblo people built homes of adobe, or sun-dried clay

Southwest Pueblo pottery Very skilled at painted pottery Each community developed its own style

Southwest cont… Navajo Learned the art of weaving from Pueblo weavers As Spanish and Mexican settlers moved in the area (in 18th and 19th cent) they introduced new designs By early 19th cent. making blankets of equal quality to industrial looms in Europe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vyw93hJt__g

Little Clarification The word Pow Wow, or pau wau, means a gathering of people coming together to trade. Explorers misinterpreted the ceremony of medicine men dancing, thinking all natives gathered to sing and dance in this manner. The modern day Pow Wow evolved from the Grass Dance Societies that formed during the early 1800’s. The dances were an opportunity for the warriors to reenact their brave deeds for all the members of the tribe to witness. The growth of reservations gave rise to the modern Pow Wow. This was a time of transition for Native peoples across North America. Tribal customs and religions were outlawed. The Grass Dance was one of the few celebrations that was allowed into this new era. The Grass Dance became an opportunity to maintain some of the earlier tribal customs that were vanishing.

#4 ~ Great Plains Region Most familiar image of Natives comes from the Great Plains Stretching between Mississippi R. and Rocky Mts. to Gulf of Mexico and northern Alberta/Saskatchewan

Great Plains cont… Blackfeet, Crow, Cheyenne, Sioux, Arapaho Many of the areas inhabited unsuitable for farming Nomadic people Hunters continually on the move Followed the great herds of bison This constant migration made weaving and pottery, for example, impractical

Great Plains Lived in tepees Skilled in tanning leather Moveable tents using lightweight poles with hides stretched over them Skilled in tanning leather Like all Aboriginal peoples, resourceful Hides used for homes, shields and robes Often painted and decorated

Sweat Lodge ceremony Many native peoples have similar traditions is a hut, typically dome-shaped and made with natural materials, used by Indigenous peoples of the Americas for ceremonial steam baths and prayer. Sauna-like environment Medicinal and religious significance Sweatlodge ceremony "responds" to what the people need

#5 ~ Woodlands Region Included area between Mississippi R and Atlantic Coast, from Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico

Woodlands Region Great Mound Builders Ohio River Valley Small villages clustered around monuments, like large earthworms Purpose of these mounds remains a mystery Great Serpent Mound
