Signs of Starter Issues in Your Car

One of the most important parts of a car is the starter relay, which is a core component of the vehicle's ignition system.

The starter relay is designed to redirect power from the battery to the starter solenoid, which then activates the starter to spin over the engine.

The proper activation of the process allows the ignition switch's circuit to complete, which then allows the car to shut off when the key is turned off.

The starter relay is prone to mechanical failure and will need to be replaced when it wears out.

Here are the few symptoms of a malfunctioning starter relay.

Vehicle fails to start

The first sign of a starter relay failure is the vehicle failing to start when you engage the ignition process.

This problem is attributed to a circuit that has failed, so no matter how many times you try the car will not start.

If the circuit has not completely failed, then you will get to hear a clicking noise as you try to turn the key.

Starter stays on after engine starts

When you start the engine and release the key, the circuit is supposed to close, which will discontinue power to the starter motor.

If you experience the starter to stay on after the vehicle has ignited, then the main contacts in the starter relay might have welded together in a closed position.

When this occurs the starter relay will be stuck in the on position and damage will occur to the starter and to a host of other components if it is not taken care of immediately.

Sporadic issues starting the car

If the starter relay is working properly, then it will send power to the starter every time it is engaged.

But, sometimes the starter relay will become damaged due to excessive heat, dirt, and debris that might cause sporadic operation of the starter.

If you start your car and the starter doesn't activate instantly, but when you turn the key once again it works, then the issue is caused due to a problem with the relay.

In most of the cases a sporadic starting problem is linked to the bad wire connection that may become dirty due to exposure under the hood.

Abnormal sound coming from the starter

If you hear clicking sound, this indicates that the battery is low, but it is also caused due to the inability of the starter relay to send a full signal.

The relay either sends a full electrical current to the starter or sends nothing at all.

However, a damaged starter relay will cause the starter to make a clicking sound when the key is turned on.

Finally  The starter relay is a tough and reliable component, however, it is possible for damages to occur, which will require an immediate professional attention.  If you come across any of these signs, then you should immediately contact a professional automotive repair shop to fix the issue.
