5 Steps to Boost Your Career in 2018  Are you thinking of starting an apprenticeship in 2018 or are you currently undertaking one now? Apprenticeships are a great way to get experience on-the-job while you get paid and are a foot in the door to the career you want. That’s pretty awesome.  As with any job, some apprentices will excel in their position while others won’t do as well as they hope for. Why is that? It can be a little daunting going from school or unemployment straight into the workforce. Suddenly there is a lot expected of you and it can take time to settle into a new position with people you have probably never met before.  Are you thinking of starting an apprenticeship in 2018 or are you currently undertaking one now? Trades: A Worthwhile Career  There is a widely held belief that getting a university education is an absolute must for school graduates. Esteemed professions such as medicine, law, accountancy and engineering all hold a very strong allure for well-meaning parents who want the very best for their kids’ future.  Parents commonly encourage their children to study hard at school so they can attend university and achieve career goals that are deemed appropriate or worthy. University is typically believed to be the best pathway to career success and security. But is it really? When it comes to employability, cost and earning potential, a trade can actually be a better choice than a uni degree for some graduates.  There is a widely held belief that getting a university education is an absolute must for school graduates. Females in Non-Traditional Roles  Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (Smart Employment Solutions)  No-one would have witnessed a female in a male dominated industry back in our grandfathers’ day. Women were at home cooking, cleaning and looking after the kids. After all, the man was the bread winner and that was the end of that.  Step forward to the 1980s and there was a change tiptoeing into these male dominated industries. I did my college time with a female and the class next door also had a female in the early 80s. What these women lacked in front and bravado they made up for in the classroom and always seemed to find themselves at the pointy end of the test results. It was actually a little embarrassing for a lot of the fellas. We learnt from them and they learnt from us. If I took anything away from that time, it was never judge a book by its cover. I am sure they were a little intimidated by the 14 to 1 ratio in the classroom. It was funny when we finished college, the ratio (as the teacher put it) was now 1 to 14. To this day I never underestimate the capability of a woman.  Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (Smart Employment Solutions)  No-one would have witnessed a female in a male dominated industry back in our grandfathers’ day.
