Seed Structure and Function The Anthophyta (angiosperms) are the largest phylum or division in the plant kingdom. The two classes of Anthophyta are monocotyledons and dicotyledons.
Monocotyledons (monocots) Monocots have one seed part (cotyledon) that cannot be split. Examples are corn, grass and wheat
Dicotyledons (dicots) Dicots have two seed parts (cotyledons) that can be split in two. Examples are peas, beans and maple tree seeds.
The seed is important because it contains the embryo that becomes the new plant or sporophyte. Many seeds are a major source of food for humans and animals. Corn, wheat and rice are seeds that are used for food by people all over the world.
