Symptoms of Power Steering Pump Failure

Most vehicles, these days have power steering, which allows you turn the steering wheel smoothly without much effort.

Power steering works due to a pump that allows the power steering fluid to flow into the gear for the steering.

This gear is responsible for applying the proper pressure so that the steering wheel can turn easily for the driver.

Power steering pump lasts for a while and in due course of time they malfunction.

Here are the following symptoms of power steering pump failure.

Difficulty in turning the wheel 1

The most common symptoms associated with power steering pump failure is you will feel difficulty in turning the steering wheel.

The steering wheel of your vehicle will feel very stiff than usual and you will have to use a lot of strength & force just to make a basic turn.

This is an indication that the power steering pump has malfunctioned and needs a replacement.

Appearance of the power steering fluid 2

When the power steering fluid is old, it can cause the tubes that move the fluid to gum up, which leads to power steering failure.

The appearance of the power steering fluid will tell you everything about the condition of the power steering pump.

The new fluid appears red and its odor is very distinctive, while the power steering fluid which has turned to dark grey indicates oxidation.

If you notice foams or bubbles present in the fluid, then it indicates water or air in the power steering line.

If you come across flakes of chrome in the power steering fluid, then it indicates degradation in the power steering pump.

If the level of your power steering fluid is low, then it is a sign of a leak, which might be caused due to a failing power steering pump.

You can spot a leak in the power steering fluid after you have parked your car, and when you move it, you will notice red splashes indicating a leak.

A low power steering fluid level can also cause the pump to produce abnormal sounds.

Squealing noise in a car can be caused due to a number of reasons.

However, if you hear a squealing noise when you turn the steering wheel, or when driving slowly, it means the power steering pump is failing.

When you start the car & hear a clunking or chattering noise under the hood, it is related to the power steering pump failure.

Lastly

If you experience any of the above-mentioned symptoms, then it indicates to a power steering pump failure.

The cost of power steering pump failure replacement depends upon the automotive shop, and you must immediately replace it before it further complicates the situation.
