Presentation transcript:

A dual mass flywheel is a type of flywheel designed to absorb the shock of a clutch being released.

The dual mass flywheel is part of a standard transmission clutch assembly, which cushion the shocks associated with releasing a clutch.

It not only helps with the feel of disengaging the clutch, but also helps protect other parts from the damaging shocks.

It is basically a two-piece flywheel as opposed to the more common flywheel made from one solid piece of iron.

One of the two main pieces called a primary flywheel, bolts solidly to the rear of the engine's crankshaft.

While the secondary flywheel is attached to the primary section in a way that lets it rotate slightly against heavy springs when the clutch is released.

A dual mass flywheel noise is commonly caused by a damaged internal spring, while other noises can come from internal parts in the cushion assembly.

If you experience a chatter when releasing the clutch, it usually means the clutch pressure plate or the flywheel is damaged.

A common dual mass flywheel problem is damaged internal cushion springs as the internal spring assembly is the weakest point.

A big problem with dual mass flywheel is that they cannot be resurfaced and if the clutch disc mating surface has hot spots, then it needs to be replaced.

Excessive heat is the primary cause of dual mass flywheel failure, as the slipping clutch generates heat, and you can save the flywheel by replacing the clutch.

Pressing the clutch violently can damage the internal mechanisms inside the flywheel, this leads to premature failure of the flywheel.

The condition of the dual mass flywheel also depends upon the type of your driving as reckless driving can wear them out.

Each dual mass flywheel is designed keeping in mind the number of shifts it can handle in its lifetime, if it exceeds that, then it fails.

Sometimes a manufacturing defect in material or assembly can cause a failure in the dual mass flywheel.

The dual mass flywheel is expensive to replace, but you can make it last longer by following good driving habits.

The dual mass flywheel is an integral part of the clutch system and if it encounters any issues, it must be immediately replaced.

Always ensure that you get the best quality dual mass flywheel installed in your car.
