© Copyright Showeet.com YOUR LOGO EVALUATION AND INNOVATION 2 Evaluation and innovation are related concepts. What is evaluation? "Evaluation is the collection of, analysis and interpretation of information about any aspect of a programme of education or training as part of a recognised process of judging its effectiveness, its efficiency and any other outcomes it may have." What is innovation? Innovation is defined as “the process of making changes to something established by introducing something new.”

© Copyright Showeet.com YOUR LOGO 3 NOTE:  The process of evaluation can usefully inform the nature of implementation of an innovation. Confirming the validity of classroom practice Evaluation may be planned for two main reasons: REASON ONEREASON TWO Evaluation is used as a means of explaining and confirming existing procedures. Evaluation is used to gain information to bring about innovation or change

© Copyright Showeet.com YOUR LOGO 4 Confirming the validity of classroom practice Evaluation may also be useful to determine wheter or not present classroom practices are working. One way of evaluating whether these new classroom practices actually worked is through observation.

© Copyright Showeet.com YOUR LOGO 5 Confirming the validity of classroom practice This observation focused on questions such as the following: Did most of the learners understand the instructions? Did most of the learners take part in the group activities which analyzed the topic? Did the learners use more English through this technique than they usually do? Was the learners’ written work better organized tan usual? Did the learners have less difficulty in finding something to write about than usual? Did the learners seem to enjoy the preparation for the writing task? EVALUATION Is practice OK YES NO CONFIRM INNOVATE

ON THE OTHER If they will be able to use the evaluation data as a basis for suggesting change.

NOTE: Without information obtained from a systematic evaluation, it is hard to plan for something that bring about the desired improvements. Introducing an innovation The issue of how an innovation is introduced and implemented is crucial. The introduction of an innovation may be approached in different ways, such as: 1.The research, development and diffusion model 2.The social interaction model 3.The action research model

© Copyright Showeet.com 8 Introducing an innovation 1.The research, development and diffusion model: It creates awareness about the management of innovation. They consume all innovation materials, the tests and the new textbook examples reflect this model. Features associated with this model are that it is initiated by an agent external to the teaching situation.

This model is collective and collaborative. 3.The action research model: It is a teacher-driven model to classroom innovation. it is highly relevant to the classroom needs as it involves evaluation. Introducing an innovation

The teacher as manager In education, the management of human resources is a key issue. What does “the teacher as manager” mean? FOR SOME PEOPLEIN SCHOOLS, CLASSROOMS It means directing learners towards getting a task done effectively. it includes dealing with financial, material and physical, as well as human resources

© Copyright Showeet.com YOUR LOGO 11 Everard outlines some characteristics of a good manager, they are: Developing aims and objectives Making effective use of resources Motivating learners Being accountable to parents, heads, learners Establishing rapport with learners and maintaining classroom organization NOTE: Good management of teaching and learning includes EVALUATION. You cannot manage properly if you do not monitor. The teacher as manager

It divides in two ways, they are: 1.Basic characteristics of leaders 2.A balanced approach to leadership in language teaching Management in language teaching: leadership Leadership skills are founded on personal qualities. Personal qualities can be developed and strengthened. Basic characteristics of leaders

© Copyright Showeet.com YOUR LOGO 13 Management in language teaching: leadership Basic characteristics of leaders Personal qualitiesLeadership skills They show up in the classroom in the way in which teachers respond to slow learners, plan lessons and so on. They show up in the way that teachers handle the teaching group based on their experience. EVALUATION can be used to monitor the strengths and weaknesses in teachers’ leadership skills A balanced approach to leadership in language teaching In language teaching, teachers work in institutional contexts. They focus on the contingency approach. The contingency approach is a flexible, balanced approach which responds creatively to changing needs.

Evaluation has its part to play in all these aspects and helps the teacher to examine whether any current resources are being underused.
