STRUKTUR SENYAWA KOORDINASI (VBT)

Coordination compounds are derived from simpler compounds that are joined together, or coordinated. Coordination Chemistry The two compounds have very similar formulas but are very different in appearance because of the different chemical structures.

A complex consists of a central atom, which is usually a metal atom or ion, and attached groups called ligands. The region surrounding the central atom or ion and containing the ligands is called the coordination sphere. The coordination number is the total number of points at which a central atom or ion has ligands attached. A complex that carries a net electric charge is called a complex ion. A substance consisting of one or more complexes is called a coordination compound. Some Terminology for Complexes

3 Theories : VBT, CFT, MOT

Correlation between geometry, hybridization and magnetic properties Magnetic properties Magnetic susceptibility measurements can be used to tell if a complex is high or low spin They can also be used to distinguish between square planar and tetrahedral geometries. Square planar complexes are nearly always low spin d 8 (diamagnetic). If a four coordinate compound is paramagnetic it is probably tetrahedral e.g. [Ni(CN) 4 ] 2- (square planar) is diamagnetic, but [NiCl 4 ] 2- (tetrahedral) is paramagnetic For octahedral complexes: high spin  sp 3 d 2, low spin  d 2 sp 3
