THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSORS
Presentation transcript:

The throttle body is an important piece of the air intake system that controls the amount of air flowing into the engine.

The amount of air allowed in is a function of how far the driver presses the accelerator pedal to the floor.

The throttle position sensor measures the distance the accelerator pedal goes down and relays this information to the car's main computer.

The position of the pedal along this range is determined by the computer and then the amount of fuel needed by the car is injected into the system.

Here are the causes of the throttle position body malfunctioning.

Dirt and debris inside the housing

Dirt and debris can build up inside the housing, causing an interruption in air and fuel flow.

This is caused due to the obstruction caused by the grime build up as the surface is not smooth enough for the fuel & air to flow.

In an ETC system, the control module constantly monitors the throttle body performance and if there is an issue, the check engine light turns on.

Electrical issues

Electrical connection problems can cause inaccurate or intermittent information to be relayed to the car's computer.

As with any electrical connection, connectivity issues can cause a wide variety of unpredictable signals to be transmitted.

In the case of the throttle body, inaccurate or intermittent information is displayed on the car's computer resulting in faulty corrections to the air/fuel mixture.

Vacuum leaks

Vacuum leaks can disrupt the air/fuel flow due to an imbalance of airflow, which can cause throttle body pressure problems.

The issue could also be related to an incorrectly adjusted throttle stop.

This component acts as a gate-keeper & establishes a minimum or maximum position for a throttle body plate to be opened or closed.

Poor or high idle

When a throttle body malfunction, you will experience very poor or low idle. This also results in the car stopping abruptly.

In the case of a vacuum leak, you will experience a very high idle, which is caused by too much air being allowed into the intake system.

All of these symptoms will contribute to poor engine performance and as a result, will cause your check engine light to come on.

Conclusion

As a part of your regular service schedule, include the air induction service and fuel injection flush, which will clean out any dirt and debris build-up.

If you experience any of these above symptoms, then immediately take your car to an automotive repair shop.

Preventive maintenance goes a long way in ensuring that your car performs optimally and stays clear of issues like this.
