Presentation transcript:

“ There is too much time wasted discussing what we do not want (student misbehavior) rather than what we do want (student learning). Rather than solve the problem, we preserve the problem. I teach in the UK. Over the summer, I wrote a list of procedures and a classroom management plan. We’ve been back at school for about three weeks now. I spent a lot of time going through the procedures. There is no room for ambiguity. Every student knows exactly how things are done. The result of all of this? These are the most productive classes I’ve ever had, the calmest start to a school year I’ve ever had, and the most fun my students and I have ever had! ”

Classroom Management

BRAINSTORMING Classroom Management

Possible Definition “Strategies for assuring physical and psychological safety in the classroom; techniques for changing student misbehaviors and for teaching self-discipline; methods of assuring an orderly progression of events during the school day; and instructional techniques that contribute to students’ positive behavior.”

Benefits of Classroom Management Safety Positive Class Environment More Teaching Time Respect More Learning Happy Environment

Procedures! Plan for success Rehearse and reinforce Organize before students arrive Costs nothing to do Extra time gained for teaching and learning Don’t wait until next year; do it now U make a difference in students’ lives Rehearse some more Experience a class that hums with learning Success is yours because procedures work!

Classroom Management vs. Discipline Classroom management has nothing to do with discipline. Classroom management has to do with managing the classroom to extract the students’ maximum potential for learning and achievement. Discipline Is Behavior Management Effective teachers manage a classroom; they do not discipline a classroom. Classroom management is a means of organizing, structuring, and planning events to get things DONE in the classroom that will lead to student learning.
