FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Becoming lost is when an individual or group no longer knows where they are, or in what direction they need to move to go back to a known location PROCEDURES ON LOST | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT Cadets can become lost by:  Errors made in navigation decision-making  Lacking knowledge of the local terrain  Lacking general fieldcraft knowledge, particularly relating to navigation  Panicking and making decisions without thinking  Poor planning prior to movement in the field PROCEDURES ON LOST | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Stay calm, stick together, and think about the situation  Communicate with HQ or another section in order to inform them of the situation, then follow instructions  Follow the procedures on becoming lost that are covered in the detachment brief  If no contact is available, and there are no procedures to follow, then the individual or group is to move to a prominent feature  Make various signals to attract attention PROCEDURES ON LOST | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Overdue cadets are late, not lost  Cadets can become overdue from:  An injury or illness  A sudden change in weather  A malfunction with essential equipment  If overdue, cadets should continue to their original objective PROCEDURES ON OVERDUE | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Administer first aid (if trained) to get the cadet out of immediate danger  Advise HQ by radio, providing details of the illness or injury and the location.  If radio communication cannot be achieved, send at least two members to the nearest road to contact the safety vehicle.  Await arrival of qualified staff to complete evacuation.  Once the member has been evacuated, the group may continue the exercise on the advice of staff. PROCEDURES ON INJURIES | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Cadets may feel they are in danger from a range of events – for example :  A wild or domesticated animal  A person who is not from the detachment  A weather phenomenon PROCEDURES ON DANGER | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Stay calm and don’t panic  Stay clear of the danger if possible – move away from animals and avoid provoking them.  Inform the nearest member of the detachment regarding the danger, and have them inform the nearest staff member  Follow instructions provided by staff regarding the dangerous situation  Ensure you speak to staff after the event if you still do not feel comfortable PROCEDURES ON DANGER | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Instructions provide safety to an activity  Instructions can be given as:  The detachment briefing  A section briefing  A lesson  Cadets should always ask if they are unsure of instructions INSTRUCTIONS IN THE FIELD | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Check for local fire bans in the area.  Clear the ground up to 3 metres all around the fireplace.  Ensure that there are no overhanging trees above the fire.  Use a trench type of fireplace at least 30cm deep FIRE PRECAUTIONS | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Place a full water jerry and/or knapsack spray near the fire in case of emergencies  Never leave the fire unattended  Ashes must be placed in a bucket then allowed to cool before disposal.  A pre-arranged fire alarm signal should be recognised by all personnel.  Evacuation plans and routes are to be briefed. FIRE PRECAUTIONS | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Every cadet is assigned another cadet to be their buddy for the duration of the activity  “Buddies” are required to stay together where possible, and ensure they known each others location at all time.  Cadets need to look out for their buddy’s safety and welfare and seek assistance where any problems arrise. THE BUDDY SYSTEM | FCR 3

FIELDCRAFT RECRUIT  Improves the safety of the field exercise  Assists with supervision of all cadets  Prevents individuals wandering off alone  If a cadet injures themselves, then their buddy can assist them IMPORTANCE OF THE BUDDY SYSTEM | FCR 3
