Presentation transcript:

Generally in a car the ignition coil is used to coverts the 12 volts of battery power to a thousand volts of power needed to fire the spark plugs.

The ignition coil is reliable and sturdy, but over time can be damaged due to the heat, vibrations, and faulty insulation.

You can test the ignition coil of your car in two ways such as by testing the spark plugs and by testing the bench.

Here the given points help you to test the ignition coil of your car and need to be replaced if necessary.

Take proper precautions

When you are testing any part of the car, especially the engine parts you need to extremely careful.

Before starting the testing task, use safety goggles, wear tight clothes and neatly tied the hair if you have long.

The engine of your car produce electricity, so take utmost precautions to prevent the unusual or sudden incidents.

Remove the winding/spark plug

For removing the spark plug, first you need to remove the wire from the plug and refer your car's manual to confirm that you remove the right wires.

As you are doing the spark plug test for testing the ignition coil, so use the spark plug socket for removing the spark plug in your car.

If you are doing the bench test for testing the ignition coil, then refer to the service manual and remove the two windings inside the ignition coil.

Check for sparks

Reattach the plug wires after removing the spark plug. By using an insulated plier, you can hold the plug wires.

Then, let the threaded bare at the end of the spark plug to touch the grounding surface. At last start the ignition in the meantime.

When you turn the key start the ignition, you will see a bright blue spark at the end of the spark plug. Otherwise, conduct the bench test to get the spark.

Check the windings

Refer your owner manual for getting the correct resistance readings which are applicable to your car and model.

In most of the car coils, the reading of 0.75 to 0.81 Ohms are the primary winding and reading of 10,000 to 11,000 Ohms refers to the secondary winding.

After you test both of them if you find that the reading is slightly outside indicated in the owner manual, then replace the ignition coil.
