On 24 th May 1976 at a blind tasting in Paris, the California Chardonnay & the Cabernet Sauvignon wines were judged as good wines similar to the wines produced in France. The Australian wines are normally a blend of 2 or more grape varieties. The Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon are the main white grapes. In 1972 the South African government was eager for international acceptance for their wines and so introduced an elaborate system of control for ‘Wines of Origin’, which is similar to European country regulations.
