Initially the wines made in USA were not of very good quality. On 24 th May 1976 at a blind tasting in Paris, the California Chardonnay & the Cabernet Sauvignon wines were judged as good wines similar to the wines produced in France. Most Californian wines are named after the grapes used in winemaking. For e.g.- Chardonnay Food & Beverage Service - AISSMS CHMCT

95% of the crops are cultivated in California, 2 % in New York, 2 % in Washington & some 1.2 % in the other states. In 1978 a form of appellation known as AVA (Approved Viticulture Areas) was concealed. There are 2 qualities of wine made in the USA Premium Wines. Table wines. In 1972 the South African government was eager for international acceptance for their wines and so introduced an elaborate system of control for ‘Wines of Origin’, which is similar to European country regulations. It is only since the late 1980’s that has enough healthy wines of first rate varieties have been available to judge how good their wines can become. Food & Beverage Service - AISSMS CHMCT
