Family Violence In New Zealand

What is Domestic Violence?  Physical  Sexual  Psychological  Financial  Elderly Sadly the figures are truly staggering

An International Problem  Women victims of male violence aged worldwide exceed war, cancer, malaria and traffic accidents combined  In the US alone women murdered as a result of domestic violence between 9/11 and 2012 exceeded the number of terrorist victims on that day and all the soldiers subsequently killed in the war on terror combined  Male violence against women is one of the most invisible and under- recognized pandemics of our time

New Zealand’s Domestic Violence Overview  There are 525,000 incidents of domestic violence in NZ EVERY YEAR  Police receive a call every 5 ½ minutes  1 in 3 Kiwis will suffer from some form of domestic violence  13 women and 10 men die every year  80% of incidents are not reported  Annual cost to the economy is between $4.1 and $7 billion

The Cold Statistics Family violence In 2016, there were 118,910 family violence investigations by NZ Police accounting for 41% of a frontline Police Officer’s time. In 2016, 5,461 applications were made for protection orders: 5,072 (89%) were made by women and 550 (10%) by men. Intimate partner violence (IPV) 1 in 3 (35%) ever-partnered New Zealand women report having experienced physical and/or sexual IPV in their lifetime. Between 2009 and 2015, there were 92 deaths. In 98% of death events where there was a recorded history of abuse, women were the primary victim, abused by their male partner. Adult sexual assault In 2014, 24% of New Zealand women and 6% of men reported having experienced sexual assault in their lifetime. Children and young people In 2015/16, Child, Youth and Family received 142,249 Care and Protection notifications. Between 1 in 3 and 1 in 5 New Zealand women and 1 in men report having experienced child sexual abuse. 20% of female and 9% of male secondary school students report having experienced unwanted sexual contact in the last 12 months.

But why do they stay? Faith, Fear, Finances, Father, Family, Failure, Future, Friends, Fatigue, Fantasy, Forgiveness, Fuel.
