The study and application of building or assembling a structure. All people are affected in one way or another by construction technologies. Structures are everywhere we look no matter what their function

Infrastructure Infrastructure is the underlying base or basic framework of a system. An infrastructure often includes the basic buildings, services, and installations needed in order for a society function.

Types of buildings Some of the earliest constructed works were buildings. Buildings are structures providing protection and safety for humans and their possessions. Today, there are at least five different types of buildings: – Residential- Public – Commercial- Religious – Industrial

Residential Buildings A building that is created to provide shelter Shelter is one of our basic needs. Most residential buildings (homes) have living, food preparation, entertainment, sleeping, storage, and sanitary (bathrooms and laundry) spaces. It protects us from weather and outside threats.

Commercial Buildings A building created specifically for large infrastructures. Buildings may be professional offices, shopping centers, supermarkets, lodging establishments, or repair facilities. businesses occupying these buildings provide us with services or sell us goods.

Industrial Structures Structures built to provide workspace and shelter for people, materials, and equipment to produce goods and services They generally contain office space, production or service areas, storage areas, and worker support areas (such as restrooms, locker areas, and cafeterias)

Public Buildings Buildings that are designed to meet public needs. They provide areas for administration, police and security, fire protection, health care, education, and other government functions. Most public buildings are paid for with tax money.

Religious Buildings Buildings which are designed to practice religious activities. These buildings are used for worship, fellowship, education.

Civil Structures Civil structures are constructed works supporting the public interest or other technological activities. They are built for the convenience of all the people who live in an area or nation. Civil structures include constructed works that are not buildings. Examples of civil structures are streets and roads, bridges, tunnels, railroad lines, airport runways, sewers, pipelines, dams, ponds and reservoirs, communication towers, sports fields, monuments, and water towers

Construction Methods Two types of construction methods – On Site – Pre-fabricated On-site construction is when structures are built from various building materials directly at the location where it is to stand. Most large structures are constructed on-site.

Pre-fabricated construction When components or sections of a structure are manufactured in one location such as a factory setting and then delivered to and assembled on the site. Most often used in the housing industry. The parts are built in a factory and assembled on the site. Panelized construction is when individual walls panels are assembled on-site with the use of a crane to lift them into place.

Pre-fabricated construction Modular construction is the assembly of a structure on-site with sections that were made in a factory. Larger structures such as apartment buildings can also be erected using modular construction.

Inspection The purpose of inspections is to make sure the structure is being built properly. Inspections are performed throughout the life of a structure. Periodically structures are checked to make sure they are continuing to perform properly and safely.
