10/24/2016PROBLEM BASED LEARNING3

Problem based Learning It is defined as, “ the learning that results from the process o working towards the resolution of the problem”. The problem may be defined as, “ the situation presented to the students as a stimulus to acquire particular skills, knowledge and abilities in the solution of the problem.” 10/24/2016PROBLEM BASED LEARNING4

When PBL is used? This is used as an approach to the entire curriculum, It does not focus separately on nursing specialties, Clinical problems and professional issues are being used, These are being used to integrate with the necessary content for clinical practice. 10/24/2016PROBLEM BASED LEARNING5

Goals of PBL To construct an extensive and flexible knowledge base To develop effective problem solving skills To develop life long self directed learning skills among learners To promote effective collaboration and to make effective collaborators To promote intrinsic motivation among learners 10/24/2016PROBLEM BASED LEARNING6

Tips for teaching PBLs Develop realistic and comprehensive clinical problem This will help in achieving the intended learning outcomes Information should be realistic so the students can categories the information as facts, need to know and learning issues. Faculty workload can be increased, therefore, it needs collaboration and help for developing scenario Try to orient the students with the PBL approach Allow the students maximum time to think and give answers Group of students must be from 6-9 This is more effective in class room teaching It is less effective in clinical teaching 10/24/2016PROBLEM BASED LEARNING7

Advantages of PBL There are following advantages of the PBL It fosters active and cooperative learning Promotes critical thinking Promotes clinical reasoning Promotes peer teaching and peer evaluation Promotes group working Students work in interdisciplinary learning groups 10/24/2016PROBLEM BASED LEARNING8

Advantages of PBL Enhances student’s learning in peer and self directed learning Helps in development of flexible knowledge This knowledge can be applied to different contexts This develops life long learning skills 10/24/2016PROBLEM BASED LEARNING9

Disadvantages of PBL Involves the faculty time in developing the problem situation Needs shift of roles of faculty and students More time is needed to learn about PBL Student’s learning depends upon the effectiveness and functioning of the case and functioning of the group Expensive and difficult when class size is large 10/24/2016PROBLEM BASED LEARNING10
