Public transport in the city of Freiburg Florian Schneider - Freiburg City Administration

Public transport in Freiburg and its region Integrated tarif system 20 operators 150 lines 3000 km of network 60 km 53,00€ / month 70 km 70 km

1984: “Umweltschutzkarte” Context Stagnating number of public transport travellers Increasing deficit of public transport Introduction of the “Umweltschutzkarte“ First monthly “all you can drive“ ticket in Germany Valid for an unlimited number of public transport travels within Freiburg → Travelling with public transport became significantly cheaper → 15% more passengers within one year → Slightly decreasing deficit

1991: “Regiokarte” Extension of the “Umweltschutzkarte” to the region Solidary principle Transferable; a second adult and all children travel for free on Sundays 2,4 “Regiokarten” per inhabitant and year ~ 90% cost coverage by revenues

RVF ZRF Organisation 3 local authorities 20 operators Subsidies to RVF Long-term concept Planning, financing and implementation of new infrastructure Tarification Marketing Harmonised planning of the offer Distribution of revenues and subsidies

Development of passenger numbers in Freiburg Mio. travellers per year Tramway Weingarten Tramway Rieselfeld Tramway Haslach Tramway Vauban Lehen Landwasser “Umweltschutzkarte“ “RegioKarte“

Mio. travellers per year Umweltschutzkarte Development of passenger numbers in the region Tramway Vauban Tramway Haslach 30-Minuten-Takt regional trains Tramway Rieselfeld Mio. travellers per year “Umweltschutzkarte“ “Regiokarte”

Discussion Might a similar organisational structure as in Freiburg (containing one unit to represent the different local authorities and one unit to represent the operators) be an appropriate approach to achieve an integrated tarif system and a harmonised timetable in Mexico-City and its metropolitan region? Which intermodal trip chains that include public transport might have a significant potential in Mexico-City and the metropolitan region and where would be the appropriate locations to develop the corresponding transport hubs?
