Key Linguistic DEVICES Concepts Noun: word (other than a pronoun) used to identify any of a class of people, places, or things ( common noun ), or to name a particular one of these ( proper noun ). Verb: action word Adjective: describing word Noun Phrase: Verb Phrase: Adverb: a word or phrase that modifies the meaning of an adjective, verb, or other adverb, expressing manner, place, time, or degree (e.g. gently, here, now, very ). Some adverbs, for example sentence adverbs, can also be used to modify whole sentences. Passive Voice: a form or set of forms of a verb in which the subject undergoes the action of the verb (e.g. they were killed as opposed to the active form he killed them ). Active Voice : a form or set of forms of a verb in which the subject is typically the person or thing performing the action and which can take a direct object (e.g. she loved him as opposed to the passive form he was loved ). Concepts Media: The main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet) regarded collectively. Presentational devices/format: features , layout of any medium, from a website to a newspaper. (images, captions, titles, heading, headline, expert opinion, interview, sub-heading , column, sections, colours etc) Non Fiction: is prose writing that is informative or factual rather than fictional. Target Audience:: People a particular product is aimed at Purpose: is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists Journalist: A journalist is a person who collects, writes, or distributes news or other current information. Representation: the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way Synergy: (from the Greek syn-ergos , συνεργός meaning working together) is the term used to describe a situation where different entities cooperate advantageously for a final outcome . EG: when you have a business, you will have to have a website, social media, a magazine etc where you collectively advertise your product and service so people know about you in all possible sources Institution: A Media Institution is a company or organisation that is accountable for a media text. This could be through marketing, production, distribution or regulation. EG: Studio Canal is an institution which promotes films Week 6: Assessment Planning and Research Assessment Task: To write a lively newspaper article, titled: ‘Don’t Get Me Started on…’ (Write a lively newspaper or magazine article about anything that annoys you) Key Vocabulary Features of a website: colours, name of company, banners, links, advertisement, reviews etc 5WH : 5 basic question , an article usually unfolds and answers: What happened? Who is involved? Where did it take place? When did it take place? Why did that happen? Connotation : Making inferences about a text/image Denotation : making obvious inferences of a text/words/images Marketing: the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising Opinion: a statement which cannot be proven Emotive language: language which triggers a certain emotion Fact: a statement which can be proven Formats/Platforms Press: Collective term for news media and agencies collectively, especially newspapers Newspapers: a printed publication (usually issued daily or weekly) consisting of folded unstapled sheets and containing news, articles, advertisements, and correspondence. Magazine: a periodical publication containing articles and illustrations, often on a particular subject or aimed at a particular readership. Broadsheet: Broadsheet: is a type of newspaper with a large format, regarded as more serious and less sensationalist than tabloids Tabloid: is a type of newspaper having pages half the size of those of the average broadsheet, typically popular in style and dominated by sensational stories. Social media: different internet platforms where you can interact with others. EG: Facebook, Twitter etc Blog: is a truncation of the expression weblog is a discussion or informational website published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries ("posts"). Article: is a piece of writing included with others in a newspaper, magazine, or other publication Headline: is a heading at the top of an article or page in a newspaper or magazine Column: sections in newspapers Website: is a collection of related web pages, including multimedia content, typically identified with a common domain name, and published on at least one web ...
