A SIMPLE GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED TEACHER TRYING TO FIGURE OUT A SYSTEM THAT WILL WORK FOR HIM/HER AND FOR THE STUDENTS IN WHICH VALUES ARE PROMOTED AND MODELED AND TRUE LEARNING IS EVIDENT THROUGH THE JOYOUS ENGAGEMENT OF EACH AND EVERY STUDENT.

SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS, CREATE CLASS AGREEMENTS FOR NORMS, AND ESTABLISH CONSEQUENCES FOR BEING DISRUPTIVE. FOCUS ON THE NEEDS OF THE WHOLE CLASS. AVOID PUNITIVE, SARCASTIC, AND THREATENING WORDS. MODEL THE BEHAVIOR DESIRED.

PACE ACTIVITIES AND MOVEMENT TO KEEP THINGS INTERESTING. PLAN OUT YOUR TIME. LOGISTICS IS HUGE. HAVE PAPERS READY TO HAND OUT. KNOW HOW TO DISTRIBUTE THEM. THINK ABOUT TRANSITIONS AND WHAT STUDENTS DO IF THEY FINISH EARLY. PLAN CELEBRATIONS AND MILESTONES. INCLUDE GROUP REWARDS FOR REACHING GOALS. STUDENTS LEARN MORE BY DOING ASK FOR HELP IF YOU ARE OUT OF TRICKS.

ESTABLISHING EXPECTATIONS WHAT ARE THE VALUES YOU WANT TO MOST IMPART TO YOUR STUDENTS? (Share with class) WHAT ARE YOU ACTIVELY DOING TO PROMOTE THIS? KEEP IT SIMPLE WITH YOUR CLASS – LIMIT THE NUMBER OF ROOM RULES AND BE SURE THAT THE RULES HAVE A PURPOSE THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS AND OF WHICH THERE ARE CONSTANT REMINDERS/RENFORCEMENTS. SET PROTOCOLS FOR HOW THINGS ARE DONE AND ESTABLISH THEM EARLY AS ROUTINES.

SUCCESSFUL TECHNIQUES CAN WE TALK? SUCCESSFUL TECHNIQUES

BRINGING THE CURRICULUM TO LIFE SHAKE THINGS UP. AVOID TOO MUCH SAMENESS. (e.g. fill out a worksheet at the learning station every week) CONSIDER TECHNOLOGY, GAMES, TRIGGER CLIPS FOR DISCUSSION KEEP A GOOD PACE PREPARE LESSON PLANS WHICH INCLUDE WHAT YOU WANT STUDENTS TO DISCOVER. EMPOWER STUDENT LEARNING. GET THEM TO ASK QUESTIONS. AVOID FRONTAL TEACHING WHEN POSSIBLE. INCLUDE ART, MUSIC, MOVEMENT, and VISUALS.
